I know a version where 1st worm says there are 2 behind, 2nd says 1 is behind and the 3rd one says there are 3 behind. Answer was that the 3rd worm was lying, I guess the same applies here.

 

Worms themselves can be cut multiple times. If one worm was cut like this, with the 'o' being the head and '~' being the tail o- -- -~ the first worm is able to say there are two worms behind me, as when worms are cut, they can live on. The last worm says there are two worms in front. The middle of the worm/the middle worm, has neither the head nor tail, being its unable to differentiate between forward and behind, or also because it is that because the worms are cut, they are no longer worms, therefore no worms around it.
