Straight out of your link which it appears you either didn't read or understand. PG, THE RATING, is set by the rating board. Yes they consider what parents might think, but it's not set by the parents. "Parental Guidance" as you have made comment on is the act of the parent in further filtering, what the rating board has rated PG and deciding what is appropriate for their child. They are two different things. Drogo is talking of the rating PG, you are talking about the parental action that comes after the rating is defined. Drogo will say again. Think of PG as a bucket of content, (filled by the rating board) parents can pick and choose from this bucket what they think is suitable for their own kids. They cannot change the contents of the bucket and they don't re-define what PG is. So slink back on stage and pick up your microphone #celebratestoearly #icangoogle
Is there a particular bucket you think Skyblock should abide by? Should we go with the British bucket? Or maybe the Australian one? We could go with Hong Kong? Or since the server is based in America, we can go with one of the multiple rating guidelines based in America? The point I'm trying to make here is that groups of people decide what PG is. The exact specifications are going to differ with each person you ask. It's inherently an opinionated topic - that's why there's so many different rating agencies and they don't always agree. Skyblock is not affiliated with any rating agency, nor does it claim to be. There are no specific rules that need to be followed to claim a "PG" server environment if you aren't tied to any rating agency.
Drogo has said more or less, the same thing earlier. Perhaps the moderators simply use the term too loosely as using it does imply a claim to abide by at least one of these rating systems. The thing is we are not just a community of people playing a game and conversing on a forum. Skyblock is a business, receiving income and paying taxes. Claims made by its staff must be valid and accurate.
I feel like this is causing a lot of misunderstanding between players and staff. Why can't we just have it at PG-13 instead of PG? Im pretty sure anyone who passed junior high can find out ways to bypass the filter so having the server being close to PG isn't worth trying. We're not Disney or some toddler daycare this is a minecraft server for people to come and express whatever they want (providing it doesn't provoke harm, is highly inappropriate or illegal). So to have the staff moderate close to PG isn't useful. As I've said before and some people have brought up context matters as well as who and where are you disclosing the message.
I think they mean the more casual definition of pg eg pg is standing for appropriate instead of saying lets keep it appropriate its lets keep it PG its not and official claim made by paid employees just vollenteers so its fine and the server is based in America and would use that bucket not that that's revelant just think of it as a shorthand for appropriate and there is no issue and no legal definitions to worry about
This sums it up pretty well, although one minor correction: None of the 3 rating agencies in America would actually apply to Skyblock. They are all opt-in agencies, not required by any law. (But yes, you're correct, this is kinda off the point that you're making which is probably the more important point anyways)
That is pretty much the issue. The looseness with which the term is used. PG suggests it should be ok in the eyes of parents. Drogo knows that a lot of 8-13 year old will know what the term WTF means, but very few parents would want to normalised as it is here.
The thread was created due to real concerns for the younger members of the community. If that’s not worth talking about then that is pretty sad indeed.
I don't particularly see the use of filtering "wtf" etc It would be micromanaging people and that would not be fun for anyone (generally speaking) Also it's not commonly used maliciously as others have stated. If it has been used in a malicious context, staff will ask them not to say that in public chat. For example, I ask people not to say "stfu" in chat, that is more aimed at others and malicious then perhaps people expressing joy or laughter with "lmao" Just my opinion
And to a degree, Drogo agrees with this. Drogo understands now that the staff use the terms ‘PG’ and ‘appropriate’ as if they are interchangeable but they are not. Skyblock obviously has its own standards but it’s not PG. Drogo assumed the staff would be aware of this. Skyblock standards allow WTF. PG does not. Which has been Drogo’s point all along.
Just a quick thought, if this is purely just from staff saying "keep it pg" then would it just class as a point of guidance rather then a "This is PG" if that makes any sense?
Drogo thinks the term PG should be dropped all together. But it needs to be understood that what ever standards are put in place, you should consider that the majority of parents of 8-13 year olds would not consider that the term WTF, and the frequency that is it used here, appropriate. By defining what is appropriate on this server you really should consider your youngest members throughly.
pretty sure that is just a suggestion by a third party company not associated with the game and not enforced in any way shape or form
Any kid under 10 has had their parents buy them they game so those parents have made the call. That recommendation would only be for the single player game as there is no way they can rate private servers.
