Wither skeleton skulls are now unobtainable. They used to be in the legendary crate but can only be purchased for around 400 grass from other players. Yes, if you do get 3 of them (worth 1200 grass), you can indeed spawn the wither and get a netherstar and beacon. Although for the price of 3 wither heads, you could buy 6 beacons or netherstars. The only real use for wither heads is purely for decoration, trading on, or spawning the wither to allow a message to appear on the top of the screen- as it is on Kbrick_’s island.
Were they in the legendary crates at one point? The way I knew people obtained them was through killing withers in the nether in the first few months. Back when the server launched, withers would still drop their head at vanilla rates, so players quickly acquired stacks upon stacks of wither skulls. Shortly after, wither skull drops were disabled. We've been just living off of the skulls farmed early on. I still know multiple people with at least a stack of skulls that they farmed by hand at the start.

Private messages are generally left on a separate filter system. Some things blocked in global chat are allowed in PMs, most common being swear words and links. This lets friends communicate as they normally would without worrying about an unsuspecting kid in chat seeing it. Before it was fixed up on Sunday, you could bypass the filter with most words by using capital color codes. Most commonly, players would add "&F" in the middle of the word
Drogo has used this fact when clearing carpets from map art canvas. Saw clag 60 second warning but without enough time to collect all carpets so Drogo warped to spawn until clag did its thing then went back and collected carpets.
This is an interesting one. As, if you do /m, /msg, /w, /whisper, /message or any form of /m, the filter is put on the same as the public chat. ... However... Doing /r, or /reply, flat out bypasses the swear filter, allowing to swear as much as you want. Unfortunately, the Anti-Advertise (for IPs and other server’s names) and PwnFilter still work there (so if you say n-word you’ll still get muted for an hour).

Findings: We busted the myth that they are completely useless. Despite their inability to trade and the fact that iron golem farms are disabled, villagers do in fact have a real, functional use. It turns out these 'useless' villagers can still farm crops as they normally would in 1.12.2. This remaining villager mechanic can be used to create fully-automatic carrot/wheat/potato farms.
