    Full Support!
Me and 52Phenomenon have been working on our island. It is split in four sections: Grass, Snow, Sand and Nether. All of them were easy to complete apart from Sand. After a few months, we have finally completed the Sand Section. It was a pain, to be honest. Adding this would help those terraforming people out and could possibly decrease the island farming.

Maybe a little bit late but Full Support, sand should be legal and a little bit more easy to get apart from kits, Concrete is beautifull and it should indeed be less hard to get.

Support. Sand is becoming more used in crafting recipes, such as concrete, so I think we should make it more available to everyone. If people are worried about island farming being an issue then why don't we, if it doesn't already exist, add a delay between creating islands? People would be less likely to island farm due to the extra time they will have to wait between creating islands, plus, it would just be easier to purchase sand than wait a while for a measly 3 pieces.

Support. I would, however, like to see dirt added back into the suggestion Southwark .
I currently am working on a large island terraform, and even the 100*100 unexpanded that I have would take 10,000 grass blocks to complete. Making grass the only way to have a dirtscape would actually promote island farming as an easier way to get grass, rather than placing down whole grass blocks.
Alternate idea: Composting like in ex nihilo: crafting any biodegradable items like saplings or leaf blocks in a 3*3 crafting grid makes one dirt. That might, however, make it too easy to get dirt.
Full support on sand as well.

    So are diamonds...
    and dragon eggs...
    and elytra...
    and grass...
    and obsidian...
    and iron...
    and horse armor...
    and all nether items...
if this were normal survival sand would be cheap *literally* as dirt.

That is a decent idea, however, it should not be an item that is as easy to obtain as the listed items.

I have used the Ex Nihilo mod and I've also played a server where they've actually recreated that mod using plugins and their own coding, but it is a very complex gamemode. Although I like this idea, I think that this is far too advanced for skyblock.

The idea would not be advanced. It is just a crafting recipe.
Any suggestions as to how to make the crafting recipe more expensive? For example, require a bucket of water in the center to be emptied?

I just don't think dirt should be legal to trade. You get over a stack of it from island farming, around 73 pieces if I remember correctly, and your idea is time consuming; people will want to island farm because you get more dirt in less amount of time.

The idea would not legalize dirt trade; it would simply make it easier for people who want to make large grass/dirt landscapes (me)

Ah, sorry. You said this in the thread so I assumed that your idea was to make dirt legal.
However, I would still like to stick with my previous thought:
