This is by design.

The islands are aligned on a 200x200 grid to keep the math simple, but we use odd number sizes of islands so that there can be a center block. The bedrock marks your island's center.

However, when you fully expand your island, we give you an extra strip of blocks along the x and z axis so you can connect islands if you want. You don't have to build along that edge if you don't want to.
