What version on Minecraft are you using? People have been reporting that issue after the release of 1.7.7, 1.7.8, and 1.7.9.

I'm using 1.7.9, but as I put optifine back on it worked.

I suggest seeing how it looks in 1.7.2, 1.7.4, or 1.7.5, there were server-side protocol changes that may have affected the textures.
