Apparently in California (I'm not sure about other states, but I assume its similar to California's) you need insurance to drive otherwise you can get your car impounded and get arrested.

Oh wow. It’s not like that in Australia. You only need to have your car registered and road worthy (safe to be driven on roads)

It's optional, but most people do buy insurance just to save a little money if they get in a crash or whatever
