Yams and sweet potatoes are from different families and genera (Latin ftw). Some parts of the U.S. and Canada call sweet potatoes (certain varieties) yams. In other words, true yams are NOT sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are also not potatoes, in the truest sense. Different families but the same order (along with many more differences which I am not going to list).
