What happens when DNA is damaged?

DNA gets damaged everyday. Luckily, we have strong cells that have mechanisms to repair damaged DNA. As well as, having a large amount of cells in storage to be active and remain active when we become the elderly. However, there is some damage that cannot be repaired by the cells and it will remain damaged. Scientists believe that this and the loss of ability to fix ourselves is what makes us grow older. Some DNA damage is as harmless as mutation while other DNA damage such as the break of a DNA strand could shorten your life span. There is another type of damage called build up. It is when DNA splits in half and gives the information to its 2 daughter cells. During the division, a stretch of DNA at each end of the chromosome that doesn't do any encoding but instead protects protein encoding, the telemore, becomes shorter. When the telemore becomes too short, it will no longer protect the cell's DNA. This can cause serious damage. The telemore can not be repaired or restored and most of the time the body responds by shutting off the cells division causing more damage than good(Usually cancer).


You may have seen the above picture in your biology class or you may have not taken biology yet. If you have, then you should know more about the daughter cells than I have mentioned.

Tears are actually quite strange, there's no reason for the human body to produce more than needed to lubricate the eyes. That's the only use for tears. Did you know humans are the only animal species to produce more tears than needed to lubricate eyes? We're the only species that cries.
