so today I spend more time working on completing my sugarcane farm upto 10 floors, but a problem I had in the beginning is happening again. that problem is that my sugarcane pops off from the dirt. now I know this usually happens when there's no water running besides the dirt (or sand) where the sugarcane is planted on, but that isn't the case with me. what's even weirder is that it only happens on ONE side of my sugarcane farm, to be precise on the left side, as you can see here on my screenshot now if you've just 1 floor with sugarcane it's not that much of a problem, just replant them once in a while and it's all ok, but having to replant the sugarcane constantly on 10 floors is a different story... now I've been thinking it may be a chunk problem. to immediatly show why I'll show you this screenshot with the help of NEI you can show chunk boundaries, and as you can see, the left side of the sugarcane is just outside the chunk in which the water is flowing. now I was thinking, could it be possible that the server sometimes derps, or loads chunks 1 by 1, and the chunk with the left side of the farm loads before the water, and updates too soon, thinking there may not be any water? or is there another cause? if this is the case, it'd mean I'd have to add a water stream in the same chunk as the left side of the farm, which is quite some work, but doable. but I don't want to do it before knowing it for sure
From looking at the pictures and some of the information you need more light, may i suggest for you to place torches every 6 bocks or so, then the sugercanes wont dissapear, this is the only way i think that could cause this.
actually, I researched this before I made the farm, but sugarcane has the same properties as cactus when it comes to light, meaning they don't need any light at all to grow.
I actually think it may be lighting, I know I've made farms with little light and they kept falling off the dirt, but when I applied glowstone they stayed on the dirt.
but then why does the sugarcane on pop off on the left side, and not the right? it never ever happened on the right side, but if it's indeed because of light, it shouldn't matter on what side it is
for now I've added water on the other side of the sugarcane on the left on all floors, and so far so good, but if it still pops off now, I'll defintely will try the torches. but I just think it's rather the water because it's just too big of a coincidence for me that the left side of the sugarcane is outside the chunk the waterstream is in.
don't misunderstand, I appreciate your help. I just really believe it's rather a chunk issue, then a lighting issue. so far I covered both sides of the sugarcane farm with a second stream on the side of the dirt blocks (only needed to do one side, but y'know, for completions sake) and it seems it's all going well. no sugarcane has popped off, but I'm still keeping an eye on it as not too long ago it also went well for several days even though I had done nothing else. I'll keep you guys updated on this, incase other people also have this problem.
