    Hello all,

This is just a half-baked conjecture I came up with. I noticed many times in game, and in responses to my ;Economic study' thread that people sometimes buy large quantities of a seemingly cheap or worthless item in the hopes that the price will rise and they can sell for a profit.

As this behavior is characteristic of stock markets all over the world, I thought it'd be an interesting idea to have a kind of stock market in game. To supplement the current trading system which forms the bulk of the Skyblock economy, I'd like to suggest the creation of a stock exchange system, where people can 'bet' and invest on the future prices of certain in game items.

Not only would this add an interesting new aspect to the game, it'd also act as a buffer against rare inflation by having another system of items with which to trade. Since there's no /pay currency, renamed items(similar to the way wirehooks are renamed vote keys) could be used to represent these shares. This'd also help prevent duping.

Again, this is just a rough idea and I'd like to know if it'd be applicable to Skyblock.

    Thanks for reading!

    So like an auction plugin?

I mean - all in all it’s a great idea - but I just don’t think it’s relevant to the Skyblock server. You could probably get players to do this between themselves without such a big thing with their own items. You might as well just use lottery as it’s both luck.

Well, no. Although it'd be way more convenient, an auction plugin would interfere with the 'barter' economy which gives Skyblock.net such a unique vibe. I'm suggesting a new kind of trading system which is tied with but somewhat independent of the rares market. That way, if the prices of the rares market inflates the economy too much, there'll be something else to even it out.

You're right. I didn't see much relevance to the skyblock server when I suggested this; I just thought of a solution to the rare inflation problem which was part of the reason for the new server.

Players decide on the worth of items that don't have a fixed price. People could manipulate stocks quite easily to get richer. Net is survival based and the concept of stocks doesn't fit.

What you need to understand is the "economy" isn't there. While it mimics similar characteristics to our irl economy, net isn't an economy server and people made up majority of the prices based on their beliefs of what an item is worth. It mimics irl because that what we grow up with so we try slotting it into a server that isn't about economy. And honestly, it hasn't turned out well. You can examine it all you want to find trends and patterns but at the end of the day the server is still survival and its players influence which determines the prices.

The new server isn't just around because players messed up the prices. Its to do with the fact the server has never seen a reset since 2012, the skyblock plugin needs and update and new features to keep up and the performance has been lacking for a while.

People will disagree. I'll just say i've seen examples that show rumours are a more powerful tool to change the prices of things on the server.

You see people tampering with the economy all the time in real life. It's not an issue unique to skyblock.net, and it's certainly not an issue unique to video gaming (Think CS:GO gambling scandals).

In response to your statement that the economy isn't there, it most certainly is there. I very much agree with your point that people try and apply 'irl' formats to things in game, and I thank you for making that interesting point.

Yes, I am aware that a screwed up pricing system isn't the sole reason for the new server, and I did not claim that it was. I only stated that it was part of the reason.

To be honest, I was kinda wishy washy on whether I wanted to even bring this idea up, since I wasn't too sure that it was applicable to Skyblock.net. However, since I don't consider myself an expert on the way things work on the server, I just thought I'd throw it out there and see if I was correct or not.

Please PM me! You seem to be an intelligent person with much experience here and I think I can learn a lot from you.
