I have been told by friends and ingame players that if I change my minecraft username I will loose my donation rank. Is this really true or not?

If you change your name, on .net, you loose the ownership of your island. On .org, you loose the ownership of your island and your donation rank. That's what I've been told anyway.

If you change your name and you loose your island, you can get back to it if you have coords. Contact a mod and they'll tp you back to your island. Hope this helps! c:

 

If you have an alt you can simply give it your island by adding them in the coop, doing /changeleader (alt name). You can change your name and make your alt invite you again. Or, you can give your island to someone you really trust and tell them ahead of time what your new name is going to be. c:

 

Name changing is now supported, you wont lose anything, if you didnt know that already.
