I made a donation and I received a monster spawner. I read in another thread that you have to be "nearby" in order for them to work. How near? I set mine up 24 blocks above a platform, so the hostile mobs would fall to their deaths and I can collect their loot, but its not working. Is it too high? Maybe it doesn't spawn hostile mobs. It's called a "monster spawner," but when I set it down, it looks like maybe it spawns pigs. Is that possible? If its a pig spawner, does it need to be set up on grass? Can I break it and pick it up and move it, or is it stuck right where it is now? Thanks for you help.
Monster spawners will only be activated when a player approaches its activation perimeter, which has a radius of approximately 7-8 blocks. If no movement of players is registered (within this radius) by the mob spawner, the mob spawner will automatically turn dormant. I believe you need grass surrounding friendly monster spawners for them to work - correct me if I'm wrong. The hostile mobs, given you use monster spawners, are able to spawn anywhere. Regarding the mobility of spawners: you cannot mine or break them once they have been placed. Only moderators can break spawners. Donators can - again, correct me if I'm wrong - alter the type of monster spawner using the /spawner or /changems command.
Ok, thanks. So, I changed it to a skeleton spawner, and I was killed quite immediately. I"m now trying to redesign it with another platform, so I can be closer to it to keep it activated. I will try 8 blocks and see how that goes. Thanks, again.
Eight works great! I think farther away would also work because they start falling before I get all the way up to the new platform.
