ok so here's a list of farms and the spreadsheets i made to calculate how much each layers you should realistically make per chunk

this is based on crop hopper t3 max pickup rate being 3 items per second, if you get the random growth speed (lag causes this to happen alot) of 4 per second only 3 are harvested and the 4th will spawn in and lower future rates so best to stick under 3 per sec

the growth rates of crops is an average based on other people testing so stick to 2.5 per sec so u don't just place more then u can harvest

sugar cane rows (water row then 2 dirt then 1 water 2 dirt repeat)
15 layers averaging ~2.55 spawns per sec

Sugarcane compact (slam in a ton more per layer, dosn't change rates just how tall the farm will be in the end)
13 layers averaging ~2.46 spawns per sec

Wheat (good ol 16x16 farm 4 water source)
    18 layers averaging ~2.38

    Pumpkin or Melon (checkerboard)
18 layers averaging ~2.48 per sec

Pumpkin And Melon (mix farm every other row ina checkerboard)
9 layers averaging ~2.48 per sec

for calculating price of whats the "best crop" is very simple, whatever has the highest sell price in /shop
the layout of the crops wont effect how much u make no matter what just how much u save in investment costs the more layers the more investment. growth speed of crops becomes irrelevant once u hit max per sec because at that point they are all the same just dif incomes

if you want to calculate investment cost do 800 x the number on the left side of the green number you pick and thats how much itl cost you per chunk to make the farm for specifically dirt

hope this helps some of yall plan your farms ive left out cactus because its not good, low sell price and investment cost is 1200 per compared to 800 per so its a waist of your money. sell the sand and buy dirt from shop and u will have extra money for more dirt.

EDIT: total max size for farm
since some of yall wonder whats the realistic max( id push to call this something other then max for it can be confusing to new players(maybe like overmax cuz this should really only be achieved if u dont have something better to spend extra dirt on)) u CAN make your farm to the point of slamming on average over 3 per sec (this is very inefficient for dirt cost but if u dont care abt a month per extra layer added to return rate) then take the 3.5 values on the charts, this will more or less guarantee u hit 3 per sec no matter what just i do advise u build all your chunks to a comfortable level first cuz the return rate for layers at this point takes exponential time per layer

A great add-on for this game is the different melon/pumpkins stems resources pack from vaniila tweaks.
