All statements below consider the long-term winnings and losses based on the laws of averages. For example, if playing a casino with odds of 1 in 9, you will lose 8 times more often than you win!

Also, this is not an attack on casinos or operators but simply advice for anyone using casinos.

    “Item Doublers.”
Many players operate what they call a “doubler”. You play and you have a chance to double what you put in. A lot of operators advertise 50/50 chance of winning and some of them might be, but some of them are actually, a 4 in 9 chance so in actual fact, you only have a 44.4444% chance of winning and you have a greater chance of losing.

    “Quoted winnings”

Many operators will entice players by stating something like “200 grass won here!!” Which might very well be true, but if that casino costs 1 grass to play and has a 1/9 chance of winning, then about 1600 grass was lost at that casino. Obviously, you are not likely to play this casino if it advertises ”1600 grass lost here”, but really, it’s the same thing as “200 grass won here”

    “Unclear odds”
The rules about casinos are that if odds are stated, then they must be accurate. Some players might quote incorrect odds unintentionally or simply give some vague indication.

At first glance you might think this casino gives a 50%chance (1 in 2) of winning. Which makes sense given that each spin costs 1000 grass and on average, the operator would get 2000 grass for the DP Heads which is pretty good deal for the operator.

After speaking to the operator, (who was very upfront and honest with the odds) it turns out that each light has a 50% of lighting, BUT only if the light before it is lit. So the first light has a 50% (1/2) chance, the second has a 25% (1/4) chance, the third has a 12.5% (1/8) chance, and the last one which is the one that really matters, actually has a 6.25% (1/16) chance of being lit and awarding the prize.

So at the cost of 1000 grass per spin and it paying out, on average every 16th time, the operator will actually be getting 16,000 grass for every DP head won.

This is just one example and Drogo is sure there are many more out there where the operator despite their best efforts, were unclear on the real odds, so it pays to ask, especially if you are paying a large amount of grass per spin.

    “Consider the value”
Try not to get too excited by the flashing lights and the fairly worthless gold that spews from casinos and weigh up the value of the prizes and what they would cost just to buy outright.

Firstly, gold is pretty much worthless when weighed against the grass you put in.

When you see the odds think of it as it is the price. 1/81 means players will on average pay 81 grass for the prize. If that’s a spawner that is worth about 32 grass, then just go and buy a spawner. Don’t get excited if, you’ve put 40 grass in and got a spawner.

There aren’t too many heads worth 729 grass, so if you see a casino with heads at 1/729 odds, you have to think if it’s worth it. You will likely find the heads that are worth 700+ in a casino running at 1/6561 odds.

    “Scam, Empty or Abandoned Casinos”
There certainly have been casinos that have been found to be empty or to have odds far lower than advertised. Drogo suspects this will always be the case so be aware. Staff don’t check them unless asked, so there is no way to know.
Of course, there are very legit casinos being operated and maintained by respected players as well.

    "Enjoyment"
All that being said, if you enjoy the excitement of casinos and don’t really care about the grass, then knock yourself out. There are plenty of casino operators that will gladly take your grass from you.

And of course, the most important advice Drogo could give is, Don't become addicted to casinos or gambling.

Drogo has often said that introducing a highly addictive practice to a kids game was a bad and irresponsible idea. The argument was always that it wasn't real life money so the point was somewhat lost on those who argued for casinos.

Addiction can certainly bring out the worst in people. Example linked below.

I run a casino and couldn't agree more. Gambling is for entertainment not a guarantee to make money. Don't gamble with anything you don't want to lose. And always read the info around casinos.
