Actually, come to think of it, I do have a question maybe you could answer. How does one legally obtain 1 flint and 8 obsidian?

both flint and obsidian can be traded with players, but if you're looking to get into the nether, it's disabled. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ah, okay. So are there ways to trade players for things like blaze rods or gold?

Gold is fairly common, not 100% sure about how blaze rods are sold, but you can find both.
