I've implemented my own frame protection system that you can see in my tradeshop on .net.
Basically just placed them behind glass blocks.

Unless it's behing two glass blocks, you can still break the glass real quick and then the frame before the glass returns.

 

I fully support, I knew that people could break down the item frames already, so I put the item frames inside the private section of my island, but unfortunately, donors 50 and above can do /fly, so when I logged back in, I didn't see the item frames anymore, it gets very frustrating when you have something valuable inside, for example, a diamond. The first method, the plug-in would work, but the second method wouldn't work because, first of all, it is for 1.5.1 and also, everyone would have to download forge and the mod for this to work. I hope that they fix this problem as soon as possible.
