"dont ever self harm" is like telling an alcoholic not to drink, or a smoker not to smoke. Self harm is a coping mechanism. The scientific reasoning is the part of the brain that senses physical and emotional pain is the same. Once the pain "comes down" so does the emotional side. These feelings of linking self injury to calming down often is addictive and it becomes harder to stop. Why stop something that makes you feel better. Much like any other addiction, self injury cannot just be stopped, but gradually a person will need to lift their dependence off it. This comes with a lot of support. But there is a certain stigma attached to self injury which makes is hard to seek help. It is like a shameful thing when it shouldn't be.
