So for a university assignment I have decided to write an essay on Skyblock and how we are a community. I believe we are and exhibit signs of it. However I know a lot of you will have different views.
I would really love to have your opinions on this.
Do you think we are a community?
Do you feel part of this community? if you dont think we are a community, do explain why you dont feel this way.
    How is this community run?

    PLEASE NOTE THESE RULES:
    No flaming
    No ratings
    No being mean to others
    No debates/quoting or tagging people

I need as many different ideas and views as possible. No one is going to be wrong. I will remove all ratings from posts at the end so dont bother rating.
I will also hide people's responses from player view once i view them so I can ensure people are not copying someone else and i get the best results.
Don't write an essay, thats my job :p write as much as you feel like, but not so little its pointless.

So please share what you think on this subject :)

Not to be mean but I think it's a little weird to write an essay on Skyblock.

Do you think we are a community?
No, sorry but people have their own little gangs and I thought a community is people who know everyone, and to be honest, I see new people not talked to because people are so busy talking with their friends and no one says hi, and then they feel left out, thats how I felt when I first joined the forums and I thought "Oh everyone must hate me" cause I was that person who was like "Oh hi." -silence-. I think our community it can improve through time, hopefully. but... I don't think it will in my opinion because I see people come and go and no one cares and it's so weird to see the same people do the cool things. I want to see someone join and become a loved person everytime. Love___ welcomes almost every single person to the forums and thats amazing she knows what a community is. But to all the people with a lil gang don't. I don't judge a person, I never want to leave someone out. So no, in my opinion I don't think we're a "great" community. Oh just a quick edit. Sometimes the community can make me feel bad about what I do and who I am. So just saying, it's not great to feel that way when someone doesn't like you because of a name...

Do you feel part of this community?
Yes but it took me awhile to come and go. But I only felt that cause I was mod which brings the point of... I wasn't a part of the community for like 1 year... It took me 1 year to make a mod application and finally be known. I tried getting in the forums but people were like ignoring me and didn't care. But yes I do now. :)

If you don't like my opinion, then don't reply cause I won't care... (please don't put that message in your essay).

Then what was the point of that post?
Staying on topic, I feel this is a community. People coming together around something that they all enjoy.
Do I feel a part of it? At certain points of time throughout my time here, yes; currently? No.

I'd always thought it of as skyblock community, but lately things have been falling apart, not naming anyone..

But as a community we could patch that up become friends, (only if)
Right now, I feel like we aren't a community, we have some groups.

(popular donors, cant think of anyone on top of my head but pretty much everyone who talks and tries to ship people together, people saying ily and stuff like that).

(greenie bannershop/skin comp spammers, these kids are still starting off their skyblock their bannershops are often made out of cobble or planks. this helps them get grass, but they make bad decisions, alot of them spam their shop and some even scam).

(rich kids, the peeps that make meh jelly, Findme's 3.5-5k dias really makes me jealous comparing to my 40 or so dias. xD)

and various other groups amongst greenies/donors/mods.

Do you think we are a community? Yes, definetly.
Do you feel part of this community? I used to feel like a vital part of the community, but as it is right now, no not really.
If you dont think we are a community, do explain why you dont feel this way. N/A
    How is this community run?
People who have a rank talk to people who have a rank, that's how it's been since the server started, it's even worse now, currently there's selected people who has these ranks who only talk to each other, it's like they're blocking out the whole of Skyblock so they can talk to 4 people in public chat. Some of the unranked do talk to each other because they somehow managed to find each other in chat, trust me I know that a lot of people talk in messages.
Anyway I feel like it's a segregated community, if you want people to talk to you, you need to have a rank of some sort.

Do you think we are a community?

At the moment, I do not think we are a community. This is because not everyone gets involved with each other when they can. This is usually Skygods and Donors talking to each other but can't talk to people who haven't donated, only their friends. Only a few Donors usually help people with no rank but some greenies still do not think that they are part of the skyblock community. There are small groups of Donors or Skygods who have a small group together and don't notice people in chat saying "I am new here" and "Where can I purchase items" its usually others who are meeker telling them because no one is paying attention to them just because they haven't purchased a rank. Also they have to know that they once were in that position when they joined.

Do you feel part of this community? if you dont think we are a community, do explain why you dont feel this way.

I feel part of the community since I have purchased my Donor100 rank. People started to help me more now that my name is Light Blue. When I was a Donor50 I was hardly recognized by anyone only when I messages them they noticed me. The mods always noticed me which I greatly appreciated. I was only noticed once by a Skygod when I wasn't a Donor.
We are not a community because we have to all help each other just not friends. Everybody needs to help each other even though some may not have a rank. We also need to say hello to each other and familiarize ourselves with each other so people who then know you can reach out to you for help.

    How is this community run?

This community is mainly run by Moderaters because they help everybody and give feedback, tips and information on things they do. They are helpful to everyone and cares to involve everyone without a doubt.

Do you think we are a community?
Hell yes we're a community! I haven't been here that long, but even I know that. I mean, I define a community as a group of people interacting and working together who share common interests and goals (this is also more or less the actual definition). So yeah it's a community, I mean we've got an economy, players team up to accomplish tasks, and we have the forums to communicate, whether it be for fun, suggestions to the server, or even getting help from others. Personally, I felt a sense of community the second I started browsing the forums. People know each other, laugh with each other, work with each other. Maybe I'm just new here and being optimistic, but I can't see how people don't see this as a community.

Do you feel part of this community?
Yes I feel part of this community, absolutely. Again, maybe it's mostly due to my joining of the forums, but I really gathered a sense of friendly people ready to welcome me to the community as soon as I came on. People reached out to me, people interact with me, give me feedback, I give them feedback. I feel like I'm honestly participating to my fullest potential here. I don't think I could feel any more involved in this community.

    How is this community run?
Well, I guess it's governed by the staff. They make all the big decisions and have more power to make change, and keep the community in order. However (especially with the Suggestions section of the forums), I feel that all players can make a difference in the community. All can be heard, and sometimes their ideas can end up changing the server in big ways. I guess I'd call it a pseudo-democracy.

Sorry if this post dragged on a bit, I just wanted to put my feelings on this out there. Good luck on your essay Krissy!

I am 50/50 on this, I believe we are a community. We help each other when others need help, we laugh, have fun and chit chat. Then on the other hand, players have their "groups". I'm not saying having a group of friends that you talk to all the time is bad, of course not, but some players have this group and they don't talk to anyone else that's not in the "group" or theirs. For example: A player says "Hi everyone" and most of the time, they don't even get a reply. I often feel this way, actually, I feel this way almost all of the time. In my eyes, if you are not freinds with the certain people or you are not well-known or "famous" in the community, players won't talk to you as much. In my opinion, please don't take offence to this, It really wouldn't hurt for any player to just say hello ____. It doesn't hurt you in any way, and it makes that player feel welcomed. Small actions can make a big difference.
Do you feel part of this community? if you don't think we are a community, do explain why you don't feel this way.
Back in the summer of 2014 I felt very apart in this community. Every time I logged on i was welcomed by a lot of players, and when other players logged on they were also welcomed by many players, no matter what their rank was. Then when I left to take a break and focus on my studies and etc... I came back to, not the same warm community it used to be, in my opinion. When players log on and come to say hi, no one replies. Only few players reply. Honestly now, the only time i feel apart of this community is when I am helping, whether it is refunding a players lost items, mini modding chat when a moderator isn't online, going on the forums, or just simply saying a few sentences and actually getting a few great replies from other players. Other then that, I often feel like if i left this community, no one would even notice. Sometimes there are these small moments when everyone is just socializing with well everyone, no more donors with their donor groups, and no non donors getting left out. Those are the moment when I feel like we are a community once again.
    How is this community run?
By run do you mean just one factor? One variable that runs the entire community? I believe that there are many things that run this community, not just one. Moderators and 1 factor, donors and non-donors are another factor, and of course Cyp and Noobcrew are also another factor. I don't think this community is held up just by 1 factor, every little thing ships in to build this community. It's like a bridge, a bbridge just can't stay up by it's self right? There are the big parts like the floor of the bridge, and the railing so no one falls off. And the tiniest of thing, such as the screws that form a tight bond to hold the bridge in place, and it keeps it from falling apart. Even though that screw is small, the bridge wouldn't be there without it.

This is just my opinion. I am also sorry in advance if there are any grammatical mistakes or spelling errors, I will try and fix them once I have the time. Thank you

Yes. We never feel any hesitation to help anybody in need. Even though I'm just a Greenbean, this server has had a profound impact on my life. Thank you to each and every one of you who has helped me along the way

Do you think we are a community?
I wrote this quite a while ago, but I think it's still applicable. I do believe we are an amazing community, actually. We have our cliques, and our outcasts, and even our rivalries; that's what makes us a community. We don't always cooperate over everything because it goes beyond the game into our personal opinions on life and the real world. Minecraft is just the vector by which we communicate.

Do you feel part of this community?
I do feel like a part of this community. There are people that greet me when they see my name appear and there are people that hate my guts, but that just means that I exist. People recognize my legitimacy and have formulated their own opinions about me.

    How is this community run?
I'm not sure what this question means, but I'm going to reference the hierarchy of things:
-Cyp, God Almighty himself. He has legendary status and what he says goes.
-All moderators, whether SMod, full Mod, or just TMod. They have their own internal hierarchy, but to the rest of us, they all do the same thing.
-Donor400. They know everyone worth knowing, good or bad.
-Donor250/100. They make friends easily for the most part, as they aren't idols, but still are paid attention by the masses.
-Donor50/25. That awkward phase between well-known and just coming out of the shadows. They may either be content with where they are or desperate to move up, but they're basically the middle of the hierarchy.
-Donor10. Just getting their first taste of donorship, they use their newfound powers to try to make friends with the higher ups.
-Greenbeans. The untouchables (as they are treated most of the time). These are our spammers, scammers, and other randos that decide to join this server off a list they read online. Of course there are occasional gems, but they nearly always upgrade sooner or later.

That's my take on it, anyhow. As for actual leadership, I think mods as a governing power are losing their touch. I can make the comparison to the Black Lives Matter campaign. As blacks become increasingly aggressive due to the movement, cops are then forced to reprimand them as such, furthering the idea of racism. As players rise up against supposedly abusive moderators, the moderators are thus forced to retaliate with worse blows, causing the players to repeat their original claim.

And we all know what the Black Lives Matter movement has achieved against all odds.

See I was asked to pick a community i belong to. Now i cannot think about any community i belong to other than online ones. Family has a lot of different elements beyond the unit i am taking and the university community is too cliche.
My focus is actually on what makes up a community. Choosing an online community can allow me to argue many different ideas that will make good discussion. Eg. How the internet is changing the way we view community, and how communities are not just limited by location. Skyblock is just the example i choose, the whole essay is not "about skyblock" Otherwise that would be a little weird.

I do think we are a community. A community can be comprised of people that share common interests and come together as a group. We, as players of a Minecraft server, make up this community because we interact and play the game with each other. Skyblock is our common interest that brings us together as a whole.

Do you feel part of this community? If you don't think we are a community, do explain why you don't feel this way.
Yes, I feel like I am a part of this community. It's like my second home.

    How is this community run?
Basically, this community is run by a game. By Minecraft. We are all players of this game, and we come together as a community to talk about this game. Initially, this game is what brings us all here to Skyblock, where we discuss not only Minecraft related things but also stuff that happens in real life. With all the things we talk about, including music, school, philosophy, and family, it all boils down to the one reason that this community is even alive: the game.
