Introduction To emigrate means to leave a country. To immigrate means to move to another country. Migrations streams are flows of immigrants. The Geographic Setting Both push facts and pull facts drive people to countries. Push factors mean something in the country affects them that makes them want to move such as, war, poverty and hunger. Pull factors are when a country has something you like, like, a home, jobs, money and safety. The U.S has had up to 3 migration waves. The first wave was when the U.S was founded. They came mostly from northern Europe driven from poverty or hunger. Some settled in cities but a lot settled to make farms for food. In the late 1800’s the second wave began. They came from the eastern and southern parts of Europe mostly driven because they are refugees. The third immigration began in the 1960’s most of them came from latin america or Asia. What Push Factors Drive Emigrations Political Push Factors This can be because of war or segregation. This causes people to want to move away for a better life. Economic Push Factors This can be because the government doesn't have enough money to support their people or the family doesn't have money. This drives people for example to the U.S to get a job to help their family. Environmental Push Factors Things such as drought can also cause this, examples as the 1840 drought in Ireland. It could also be anything environmental base like pollution or drop in food. What Pull Factors Drive Immigration Family Pull Factors Family such as sons or dads could be living in the U.S and you wish to stay with them so you won't be so lonely. Basicly its from joining another family. Education Pull Factor Education factors are for if you have a family that gets a weak education they could move to get a better education so they can get good jobs. Quality-of-life Pull Factors People could want to have the “American Dream” because maybe there known as a slave or just live in a cruel place but still means for a better life. How Does Immigration Affect the U.S Cultural Immigration can bring new foods culture like new religions. They can bring crafts and items and even make stuff like china town. Taxes People have to pay taxes if they go there so that they can stay. Though the money is used to help support all of them by making more public schools and help them learn the language. Jobs Foreign workers can come to build stuff or even start there own business. This is how a lot of stereotypes of Mexicans for example just mow lawns, just because a lot of people might now have the education the U.S has does not mean they can’t achieve more. It could also be for paying off taxes so the U.S can spend more to help more foreigners. This also brings in other types of food like Mexican food or italian food etc. How Does Emigration Affect the Homeland People Left Behind When people who think they have a shot at being some what better at life and moving away is called brain drain which means the loss of educated people. A lot of immigrants send money back to family this is called remittances. This can also affect people life family or friends because you will be gone. It can also be political you could have some people you need to lead your country when *bam* there gone.
