I said most mods. Not all. Shiningnova was, Deku was, as were most of the mods were. It's not a popularity contest, I just said most mods were popular, and their supports were biased. With biased supports, it seemed like a better application, which led to the promotion. Also Source was popular beforehand, he may have not been very popular, but that's not the point.

Usually these people are popular because they usually help out the community although they arent mod. I agree at times its like a popularity contest but usually the ones that are picked already show the good qualities of a mod and thats mainly the reason they were picked.

Nova is indeed a good example, she was popular because she is extremely active, helpful, cheerful and friendly also just an all round great person to talk to etc therefore people noticed her and she gained popularity.

An example for .org is keeper, she was popular before she got promoted (still is btw) because she would help people out instead of keeping to herself, she also showed everything nova did that made her popular which they both deserved it.

If you look what made them popular it was the same thing that makes a good mod, im not saying that its all about being popular im saying they deserved it because they got far enough to be noticed and enough to became a great part of the community to help it further. If youre lucky enough to become popular that way you should be very proud to be noticed as a great person in the community :D

Not all mods were popular before being promoted.

Others are popular because they're rich skygods. Although some traits that make people popular are mod traits, not all are.

But all of the popular people are rich. Which makes them better known, which makes them want to help, which makes them apply, and their popularity earns them their supports, which leads to their promotion. It's an endless cycle of popularity.

Nope, if you read carefully I was saying how little support I got before I got mod in the first place.

Maybe people get popular because they help out and make friends in game and what not. Part of being a mod is being helpful and communicating well with other players.
Either way, people do take into account the small things sometimes. Some people support to support their buddies, but others support to show a genuine appreciation, regardless of popularity. Because when you make a positive impression, the world's definitely bound to take note.

Tin15cro. I rest my case, he got promoted on MV purely based on Cyp liking him.

Thanks Krissy, but in my personal opinion it does bug me that I have tried for months and then someone puts up an app and 5 weeks later gets mod and you barely ever see them on the forums in in game, it just makes me ask myself what am I doing so wrong for that person to get promoted before me.

    ^^

Anyways. What most people have said here is true in a way, that yes, even if you don't get promoted the first time round, or the second, or the fifth, or whatever, you should keep trying. But it's easier said than done. If you quit of course, then that doesn't really count because obviously you can't really be bothered to try. But sometimes people, just get upset. Sometimes people just feel annoyed because of it. And this'll happen especially if one of their friends gets promoted. Sometimes it's nice just for people to have a little moan about it.

I love how this turned to a discussion about who holds various records for achieving mod-dom the fastest, and now it's about how the moderators are chosen.

As for the whole "moderators are chosen based off of popularity" discussion, here's my two cents. Yes, a lot of the moderators that are promoted are indeed popular players. However, the large majority of these players obtained this popularity simply by contributing to chat and helping those in need. Look at moderators lile SourceForums, IGNJonathan, LimeCoconutShake, Krissy, or even Kerahna. These moderators were promoted mainly because they helped out a lot in chat and were a friendly face in the community. Sure, popular players are promoted to moderator, but look at the reason behind it.

My point was that if a unpopular, non-donor helped out chat just as much as a popular Skygod, chances are, Cypriit would pick the popular person over the non popular person.

plus, I don't feel like playing MC too much anymore. If anything, I will apply as a web mod or dev.

I remember a year or so ago I was talking to Cypriot about how he chooses moderators.
    Some tips I've learned

    • Have a great moderator application. If you can be entertaining enough to keep Cypriot hooked while reading your app, you have a greater chance
    • Supports and no supports aren't as big as you think
    • Popularity isn't important, but it might make you stand out a little bit
    • You never know who is watching, always be alert, and helpful
    • I've been told by him that he watches specific players in-game before promoting, just to see their activity.

And if you don't get mod, cheer up, the mods are here to help you. You are valued here no matter what. :>
