I felt as if I were falling into a void when I woke up with a cold sweat. There was a pond near me with a forest encircling it. I was in a clearing. I could hear birds chirping, but, strangely, no people or any familiar sounds. I opened my mouth to call out but decided against it. A feeling in my stomach told me not to, as it often did. The ground beneath me was moist, and the sun seemed to have risen somewhat recently. The sound of a twig breaking made me turn my head. I saw what looked like a blur of black feathers, but it disappeared almost immediately. I stood up and studied myself closely but briefly. I was wearing tennis shoes, jeans, and a white tee-shirt. I couldn't really remember putting them on. The question of who or what had made the sound was beginning to bother me. I had a million questions, but they were going by so fast that I couldn't process them into clear thoughts. I stared off into the distance and tried to grab onto any memory I had, though I had very few. My name, Autumn, was one. Another was my age, 12. There were barely any personal memories I had, but I somehow remembered people and what they were like. I knew there were others wherever I was from. I tried to think of how I could have those memories and not others. Maybe whoever- or whatever- took away my memories found a way to only take away some memories and not others or something, I thought. I sighed and started walking toward the direction I had heard the twig snap, not quite knowing what I was planning on doing if I found whatever caused it. “Hello?” I called out. Something told me I was all alone in the forest. It was like I could sense that there was nobody near me. I kept walking, though my surroundings were taking on a somewhat eerie feeling. After walking about twenty feet, I started to feel as if I were being watched. I quickened my pace. Turning my head, I felt as if the trees were reaching for me with long, wooden arms. I ran forward, looking behind me. I turned my head to face forward, and saw a tree immediately in front of my face. My forehead collided with the rough wood, and I fell backward, sure I'd have a bruise there for weeks. The forest had gone back to normal and didn't seem as scary anymore. I stood up and did the only thing there was to do; I kept walking. The world around me seemed to dissolve as I walked on and on through the seemingly endless woods. Even when I studied the pattern of the trees, it didn't seem as if I were simply going in a circle. I trudged on, my legs getting weaker with each step I took. The worst part was that, in the situation I was in, there were only so many possible things I could do. I could go forward, which I was doing, I could sit down and rest, I could attempt to climb the trees, though they were so tall I couldn't see their tops, or I could scream something at the top of my lungs and hope someone heard me. No matter what I did, there was really no possible outcome I could think of that would allow me to advance. I felt like I was playing a game and had missed a step. There was obviously something I was meant to do. Maybe this is a test, I thought, Maybe whoever put me here is trying to see how long I'll keep going. I sat down against a tree and stared into the distance, longing to find my purpose in all of this. Only then did I notice something I hadn't noticed before. I realized that I could feel the trees growing. I suddenly gained confidence. Everything felt so much more... clear. Vivid. Real. The trees seemed to guide me, and I finally stumbled out of the forest, into a field. I looked around me, then turned in a full circle to see my full surroundings. But the forest had somehow become what seemed like miles away. I was standing in the middle of pretty much nothing. All around me there was just grass and the pure blue sky. I couldn't really feel the trees or the grass growing as I could before, and I was losing confidence as confusing pushed its way in. All there was was me; plain and simple me, standing all alone with absolutely no memory to search through for answers. I decided to try doing what I would normally do in a dream. I sat down and tried my best to forget everything- the woods, the sky, the grass, everything that made up the world I was in at that moment. Normally I would be whisked away to a different, normally more pleasant dream the second the memory of the previous one left my mind. When I opened my eyes, I was still there. The only difference was that I noticed a change in landscape ahead of me. I could see buildings. Of course, the buildings I saw weren't like normal buildings. The ones I saw weren't modern in the slightest. They were like small huts with straw roofs. I quickened my pace as I walked closer. I couldn't see anyone there, but it seemed like people had been there recently. The buildings were in decent shape. As I got nearer, I noticed a large fire pit close to the center. It was no longer smoking, but I could tell it had been lit somewhat recently. That meant there were people nearby. I decided to wait in the village-like place until whoever lived there came back- that is, if they came back. I sat down against a tree and watched the sun slowly lower into the sky. My eyes closed for what felt like seconds before I awoke to a dark sky and someone staring down at me. I rubbed my eyes and blinked. "H-hullo..." I jumped up quickly and immediately regretted doing so. My vision was filled with blue and black smudges, and I felt as if gravity had been amplified at least ten times. The person who was staring down at me now looked only an inch or so taller than I was. "Who are you?" He looked curious and almost angry. I didn't know why he was angry, and I felt a strange urge to go back to sleep. There were more people behind him, but most of them were distracted with other things like tending the fire. "I'm Autumn." I tried to smile. "How did you get here?" He looked almost more confused than I was. "Not sure. I was hoping you'd be able to answer that question." "You don't know how you got here? What, you just woke up here?" "Yes- well, no. I mean, I woke up earlier, in a clearing surrounded by forest. I was lost for a while, then I came here. I was really tired, so I just decided to go to sleep. I can't remember anything..." An image of black feathers reminded me of the strange things that had happened. "I saw something there... Or someone... It was too big to be a bird, but it had dark feathers." He paused for a moment before saying, "We are not alone in this place." "What do you mean 'not alone'? And who are you, anyway? You haven't told me your name." "Sorry, my name is Mathew. And to answer your first question, there are creatures that lurk in the dark. We are not the only beings here. No one has seen one of them and lived, but sometimes we catch quick glimpses of them, too brief to make out." He looked at the sky which was illuminated with small specks of light. There were no clouds in the sky, so the star-filled sky seemed to be endless. "Do you have any idea of where I came from? How did you get here?" I watched as some people, looking sleepy, disappeared into their houses. There had to be at least fifty people there, maybe a hundred. Mathew gave me a wary look. "We all just... woke up here. It was a long time ago, almost two years. There were nearly two hundred of us. We all woke up in that clearing, feeling completely disoriented. Some woke up a little bit further away, but we all collected together and found out how to survive. At night it was dangerous. People died. But, at least we were many. Everyone did their part, and we eventually made a safe place to stay. We surrounded this place with torches at night, and we turned it into our home. Nobody has shown up since that day. I don't know how you got here or why you came so much later than all of us, but you're welcome here." He smiled, but he still didn't seem to trust me. "Oh... ok. I guess I haven't any place else to stay. Thanks." I smiled and I tried to look as innocent as possible. He didn't look like he trusted me, and I wished he would. An hour later, they had made me a bed of straw to sleep on. It was in a small, worn down hut that looked like it hadn't been touched in ages, but at least it was something. They had given me a woven blanket that was barely big enough to cover me. I was glad to not be alone anymore. I could hear people talking outside, likely about me. I didn't care. All I cared about was sleep. It was so inviting. A wave of drowsiness swept over me, and I fell asleep in an instant. I awoke to sunlight streaming through cracks in the walls of the hut I slept in. My shoes sat near me head, and my feet felt like they had frozen. I sat up and pulled on my shoes. I could hear the wind blowing, restlessly trying to knock over my shelter. I stepped into the blinding sunlight, blinking rapidly until my eyes adjusted. The fire had been reduced to glowing embers, and people were already up, walking around. Then I saw Mathew. He was standing in a small garden-like area, next to a thorn-covered bush. "Hi Mathew. Or do I call you Matt? I don't really care, I just didn't know what you liked to be cal-" "Matt is fine," he mumbled. He was looking at a wall of vines. It was a blackberry bush, and I realized he was searching for ripe berries. "Ok. Do you like blackberries? Because I do. I think... I mean, it seems like I liked blackberries," I realized that I was talking really fast and decided to shut up. Mathew- Or, I guess, Matt- looked at me. "Yeah, I like blackberries. We planted our own here, and the bush has grown quite a bit, though not as big as the wild ones we've seen." He turned around, his hand full of blackberries. "Is there anything I can do here? I like picking fruit and stuff. Maybe I could help?" I offered. I felt like I needed to do some job. "Sure, if you want. Do you know anything that you're specifically good at doing?" "I really like nature, but no, I don't know of any talents I possess." I stared off into the distance, at the trees. I noticed that there were more trees than before, and it seemed more... I don't know the word. Cozy? I felt like I was at home. Further away, the trees grew closer together. It had a bit of an ominous feeling, and I made a mental note to avoid going there. Matt stared at me and I noticed I had been zoning out. He followed my gaze. "We try to stay away from there. The trees are so thick, you can't see the sun. It's not safe in that part of the forest." He looked deep in thought, like he were remembering something that happened there. He shook his head as if clearing the thought. "Why not? Do you know anything about these 'creatures'? Have they killed anyone? Why do they stay away from here? I know you're not telling everything, and I just want to know what you know about this place. Please tell me?" I pleaded. I could tell he was holding back. I hated it when people didn't trust me. He hesitated then said, "I'll tell you more tonight. For now, why don't you go talk to Melissa, that girl with blonde hair over there," he pointed at a girl that looked about a year older than I, "She'll show you around and help you get settled." I nodded and walked over to her. She was talking two a younger boy who looked about eight or nine. I noticed that there were some really young kids there. Everyone was hustling about, working hastily. I wondered if that was what it was like every day. Melissa turned around and noticed me. "Hello, you must be Autumn. I heard you just arrived! Oh, I have so many questions. But first off, we have to get you new clothes! And shoes. And maybe somewhere to stay, too." She seemed really happy, and I could already tell she had an extremely optimistic personality. "Yeah, I'm Autumn. Mathew said to come to you, so yeah. He told me you were... Marissa?" I had already forgotten her name. Great! "Actually, it's Melissa, but nice to meet you!" She smiled, and I noticed she had about a thousand freckles dotting her cheeks. Her pure red hair looked like a blazing fire, her brilliant blue eyes holding a million thoughts. I felt like I could come to like her, but I obviously had to know her better before I considered her a friend. "Sorry. Thanks for being so... welcoming here. I know I just popped up out of nowhere," I said. "Oh, of course. We're all like a family here, and you're welcome to it. But, as I was saying, we need to get you settled." She motioned for me to follow her, and we walked away, toward what I expected would be my new home for a while. That was like, my story called Autumn Leaf. It was in my clipboard xD So when I pasted... There ya go xP You said I can write whatever... So there it is
