What happens when you drink sea water?

When we have salt in our water, the body can diffuse the difference of the salt and the water to a certain extent. When the water is highly concentrated with salt, it may prove difficult to diffuse the salt from the water. The blood in our stream has salt and water combined. We also have it on the outside of the blood stream. If the salt is higher concentrated on the outside of the blood stream, the blood stream releases some of that water to balance the salt concentration. The attempt to equalize the concentration of matter on both sides is called osmosis. When you consume sea water, the osmosis process can be disastrous.

Now remember, sea water contains 4x the amount of salt than our bodily fluids contain. If you do not get it checked out, the water from inside of the cells to the outside will shrink considerably. The only way to reverse the effect is to drink lots of fresh water. When we have the much salt water within us, our body begins to urinate more trying to get rid of the extra sodium. The sad thing is, the kidneys can only produce urine that is slightly less salty than sea water. So when you urinate trying to get rid of that sodium, you only urinate pure water. With that in place, dehydration sets in motion. So, when you drink sea water, you are only setting yourself up for a dry mouth, depleted body fluids, muscle cramps, and thirst.

The body wants to compensate for the fluid loss and immediately strengthens your heart rate constricting the blood vessels. You are most likely to feel nausea, weakness, and delirium. If you still don't drink any fresh water, the brain and other organs receive less blood leading to comas, organ failures, and eventually death.

Tip: Small amounts of salt water won't kill you. ;)
