What happens when celiacs eat gluten?

Celiac Disease is a lifelong condition in which if they eat gluten, it will damage the small intestine. Gluten is another word for sugar. Your small intestine is lined with finger-shaped tissues called villi. The villi creates large surfaces that absorb vitamins, sugars, and other nutrients that pass through a humans body. When a person who has celiac disease eat gluten, the villi flatten out causing the small intestine to damage. When the small intestine is damaged, it can take less nutrients to process. If that happens, than that loss of nutrient can cause weak bones or stunt growth.

The loss of vitamins or minerals can cause slow growth in children, anemia, and osteoporosis. Celiac disease is most common in the 20s. Often, a person doesn't notice they have celiac disease until after causing damage to their small intestine. Sometimes even though a person is on the gluten-free diet, their symptoms don't go away. When this happens, pills come into play to help provide the change in the immune system to control the symptoms.

WOMEN ONLY: Sometimes if the symptoms of celiac disease worsens, women's menstrual cycles get heavier.
