What happens when your crack your knuckles?

Well, let's first talk about the reason why we crack our knuckles. Honestly, "knuckle-crackers" crack their knuckles because it is music to their ears. The sound it makes may satisfy you but those around you tend to tell you it is creepy or annoying. The "pop" sound that comes from your knuckles when you crack them is actually a fluid that lubricates your tendons and joints called synovial fluid which bubbles up whenever you begin to crack them. When you pull the bones apart, you are actually stretching the capsule containing the synovial fluid. The fluid must build back up before you can crack the same knuckle again.

Many people tend to spout about knuckle cracking giving you arthritis. This is not a proven fact and even the research doesn't match up. But, research has proven that knuckle crackers are more likely to have swollen hands and loss of grip strength. There have been 2 known reports where people have gotten hurt while trying to knuckle crack. These 2 incidents may have been let on by the vigorous strength they put into cracking their knuckles, but these reports are very rare. All in all, knuckle cracking seems to be harmless but if your joints begin to act up whenever you knuckle crack, it may be serious. Look out for these points:

1. If pain and grinding sound of joint movement begins to start, this may be a sign of osteoarthritis or another form of joint disease
2. If the joint gives away, that means that you could have dislocated it or could be a torn cartilage EX: If it locks or makes a clunking noise
3. If you hear a pop or feel pain while exerting a nearby muscle that could possibly mean you just tore a tendon

So, now you know that cracking your knuckles have no harm on you, so if someone around you begins to spread around this mythical lie you can tell them the scientific terms for what really happens when you crack your knuckles. You never know, they were probably just annoyed by you cracking your knuckles.
