This thread is to discuss popular players and moderating. It seems that the popular players get more support than the more loyal players who spend tons of time on the forums and make a great application. I really do not like this and I was thinking that just because you think someone is cool it does not mean they would be a good mod also if they are rich etc... You should judge a mod app on the facts not your own liking them or not. Thank you, Hunterpence
Yeah in theory we should be judging applications based on the person's conduct in server, and the quality of their app, and their activity on the server, not their status. However, popularity does have a lot to do with getting support., and no matter what, being popular will be a factor in peoples minds. But then again, why are these people popular? most of the time its because they are friendly, and approachable, and they have been around a while. They may have given something away, helped people, or something to make an impact. Im not saying that popular players should get mod necessarily, but influential players who make a difference to the server in a good way, with a decent mod app and proper commitment to the forums are good candidates. Thats my opinion anyway.
Generally, if you help out a lot and actively contribute to chat, you gain popularity. Like what krissy said, usually the more popular people are the more helpful ones.
i also believe that being a donor may also have a strong impact as well but i dont have a problem with this as donors are less likely to mess around when they have put money into it. I also feel that being a donor makes you stand out a lot more and therefore may help becoming popular easier. Again i have no problem with this and just like everyone is saying being are generally popular because they are approachable and helpful i mean who says that the scamming spamming angry kid is popular? Although they do tend to dominate the convos and generally shadows the nice people This is my opinion so disagree if you want
Well, it's good thing that people are not promoted based on the number of supporters on their app then. It's all about the right people, seeing the right potential. You're right, someone being popular or rich doesn't not necessarily mean they will make a good mod. Personally, I loved this guide... If they really think that someone should be a mod because they're popular or rich, there isn't much to be done about it. Not to mention that to gain popularity, you do need to spend time on the server. (No, this doesn't automatically mean that they would make a good mod, but it does show some dedication at least). So those are my two cents. I'm just not sure what you would like to be done about this. I mean, people will always be biased based on their experiences. That's just part of being human I suppose. There will always be people who thoroughly think it through and only support when they truly believe the person would be a great mod, and there will be those who support their friends or someone who was nice to them, because they want to show that person support. So the staff team says that being a donator does NOT help your chances of recieving mod, that is utter lies. It helps you; get noticed, help others more often because they want help from a 'donor' not a greenie, and often times they believe donors are less likely to grief. there has been very few non-donator mods(before promo).
The thing is, the "popularity" seems to have a positive correlation with donor rank. For instance, people tend to drop everything and practically worship 250+ donors, regardless of how... 'dislikeable' (putting it nicely) the individual may be. It's certainly a corrupt situation, but there isn't much to be done: it's part of human nature.
Good points. I've noticed this for the longest, few low donor ranks, or green beans, get recognition, but when it comes to high ranks or those with items that make them "rich," they raise in popularity.
While that may be true, you cannot discount those who have achieved status by buying there way into it, which I believe is what OP is hinting at.
Really all we can do is hope that those who make the decisions don't bend to the same fanboyism that everyone else does.
Talking in chat/helping in chat raises your popularity. I've had many greenbeans ask how im so popular And i tell them that exact answer, but being popular doesnt mean you can't get mod. Artificiality for example
Yes donors get more notice, and it does take a lot of work to be a respected non donor, but seriously at the end of the day there is something important to realise. See there is this place called skyblock.net forums. A place with no ranks. This is where non donors can start to flourish. They can be helpful, post useful things, get involved in the community and have a little bit of fun. Then they can go in game and actually contribute a little better because they are trusted and respected for the work they have done on the forums, with no limitation of rank here. If anyone has said being a donor doesn't increase your chances they are lying. But this isn't because cyp promotes donors only, but this is because donors in game generally do assist more. That's not discounting non donors who also try their best to assist but are unable due do perms. Why else do donors get promoted more? Many donors have been on for a longer time which = experience. Why do skygods get picked? Because the extra perms help them to assist much faster and easier. But here's the thing: donors don't just get popular. There are more popular non donors out there. And the prefix doesn't mean they help out at all. If you are a non donor and spend your time helping others, sooner or later you will be noticed. You don't have to be popular to get picked. You have to make an impact. Either here or ingame. People notice more than you think
Yeah my point. He was a new player, he made an impact on the forums and then suddenly this new player is a mod. The forums, I believe, had a large impact on my application. Nevermind I was patrolling chat and using my skygod perms to help. I was never that popular anyway, just active.
Yes skygod perms of literally spawning more animals, helping to get wool, getting notice to non donors in need, godding like crazy and just general. And above I did say its harder for non donors to help because of their perms but many still have helped in a way you cannot possibly imagine, it's wonderful to see. I reject any idea I got anymore popular from being skygod then if I had remained 100 donor, which I got before the light blue name tag. I was a skygod for less than a month.
