The derogatory nature of this term is a bit outdated, back when being really into anime was still not socially accepted (pre 2013). Now-a-days otaku is more meant to be someone who obsesses about anime, cosplaying, manga and is a far more socially accepted term. In fact, most people self identify as otaku.
