This maybe a simple question, but here it goes.. How do you get a grass block in your inventory? When ever I break a grass block, it turns into dirt?? For the purpose of future trading?

Also I have restarted my island a few times getting to understand how play. If I donated, and received some of the benefits, what do i need to do to ensure I don't loose my things?

Just don't place it.

 

You can't pick up grass blocks without them turning into dirt when they are placed, also, if you restart an island you lose your things unless you put them in an enderchest

 

When you place a grass block, you cannot pick it up without it turning into dirt. That's how it has always worked. You can get grass blocks from donating, trading, and voting.
