I’m curious as to the reason why ban appeals are public.

I realise this is a public forum and but I’m not looking for why the players like/dislike them being public. I’m hoping to understand the logic behind the decision to making them public.

Yeah it's like how staff reports are made private when archived but player appeals* are public?
I'd much rather know about a staff report that's been dealt with. Rather than Some player's appeal. The logic doesn't make any sense there. Also ban appeals can put the player appealing into further distress when the other people that hurt/upset them can see how they get away with doing so.

This is a guess, as I'm not staff. But perhaps because it shows a very public demonstration of a) yes there are rules, b) yes the rules need to be followed, and c) this is how rules will be dealt with if not followed. It also displays some level of transparancy on staff's behalf in case of accusations of misconduct or unfair treatment from players, which is semi-frequent from troublemakers.

I am aware of situations in the past where appeals have been removed from public view after the fact, so there must be some kind of reasoning behind it. My reasoning might be wrong, but it seems to make sense.

Archived player reports aren't made public.

Staff and player reports should probably be kept private because they are just reports, they could be false or wrong.
They certainly should be dealt with though. Too many player and staff reports go totally ignored but that’s a different discussion.

I'm not suggesting they aren't, Just seeking the logic behind why they are.

As mentioned above, I think it's mainly done for transparency reasons, similar to how mugshots and arrest records are made public in the US. It helps maintain trust between playerbase and staff if we can see that people who are punished are given due process (in most cases, we can see the evidence and reasoning behind the staff decision to issue punishments) instead of being banhammered while nobody is looking like the Boeing whistleblowers.

I think that public appeals not only allow for more transparency, but they also allow for players to understand the outcome of breaking the rules.

Transparency is good but if that is the logic behind making them public then all bans should be made public surely.

I believe once a situation is dealt with and handled the archived result is made public to further induce transparency for not only the community but perhaps the individuals involved. However, when a report or a ban appeal or what not is currently on going it is handled in a private matter the same way it is IRL. It's an ongoing investigation where third-party persons shouldn't have any way to view the situation at hand.

I personally like having them up it's funny seeing people get mad and not take accountability for actions they KNOW they did.

Keeping ban appeals public means we can make fun of the person for being banned on a MINECRAFT server

Probably for the same reason why courtrooms are public. So we can all see that they treat everybody the same / treat everybody fair.

But people aren’t treated the same if not all bans are made public.

Most people care. For transparency or to bully them if that’s their thing.
