I think the islands should be put into a random spinning wheel and a winner be chosen from there!

 

The vote system you're inferring it would be is obviously awful.
It would be nice, however, if the community could have an influence of 1 or 2 votes overall based on the island, just so they have a bit of say in the outcome. If mods can vote for mods, players should be able to vote for players (even if it's minimal impact)

 

How about players can only vote on mod entries and mods can only vote on player entries

 

I am a fan of complex voting systems, I think there should be a mathematical way to involve both the mods and the community.

I think the mods job as a select group of people is to enforce some consistency in the voting. So their scoring system should have a few criteria, maybe:
Effort (1-10)
Appearance (1-10)
Cohesion (1-10)

They could be whatever. Each island would sum up their points, and then their mod score would be their sum divided by the biggest sum. The best scoring island would have a score of 1, and the rest between 0 and 1.

The community's job is more to give a raw sense of how the island is perceived on average. Yes there is an element of popularity but I think the positives outweigh the negatives here.

In kind of the same way each islands community score would be the islands votes from the community divided by the biggest amount of island votes. Scores range from 0 to 1 again, and all that is left is to average the mods and communities scores and determine the best island Bonus points if you multiply the end result by 10 to rank each island out of 10 possible points

 

If someone can give a good reason why players shouldn’t be able to vote at all I’d like to hear it.

 

What this whole thread boils down to is that someone’s friend didn’t win, which in their opinion was wrong (It’s ok for them to have that opinion). So they made this post claiming a staff bias (which has yet to be proven) and saying that giving the community a vote would make it better.

You choosing to ignore the cons of this suggestion is your business, and doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Perhaps you want this to turn into a popularity contest because you think you would have won if it was?, who knows?

It’s a contest about islands where you win a sticker and a spawner. It’s meant to be fun…

There isn't anything wrong with suggesting it, but I'll reiterate both what myself and Leo stated earlier in the thread on why it isn't a good idea.

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it's not a reason

 

My point was even if a legitimate reason, like the ones suggested by multiple people about it turning into a popularity contest and not being accessible to all after a while, you wouldn't believe it, because you don't want to.

I do not like where this thread has gotten.

There have been good points against the suggestion to consider. Even though I have added a counterclaim to them explaining why that reason wouldn't be a huge issue, the reason still remains there.

It's fair for you to think that, although just boiling it down to that would be false. I had thought like this long before Morayeel and I started interacting at all with each other. I just had not worded it out. There is no valid way to prove staff bias, which I have said. Although I have also made it clear there has been sway in the community which leads me to believe even if it's a small amount, there is a staff bias.

Yes, it could. But anything could happen. We dont know what would happen until we had a proper way of seeing how it would turn out, which we haven't.

I think it is really cool you put your head to it and spent time on a server you dont normally play on to make an island. Although that was kind of my point. As you said, you haven't played on economy after you played on your island. I feel someone who wins the island competition should be someone who plays regularly. Not just someone who pops on and makes an island, not to discredit that as I admire you spending time on economy.

You didn't sound harsh! No worries. Although it might not mean much to you, but when I joined I looked up to all of the island competition winners and admired it. And I still do honestly. But from experience it is annoying when someone wins and they dont play on that server anymore.

I think that is all I have to say at the moment. Im not saying everyone's reasons are invalid, I've just stated why those reasons wouldn't be as big of a problem. Let me reiterate, having complete community control would be a mess. So I believe the staff shortlist would be a good alternative. Although there is the said problem of not many people entering, although the new way of voting may make people feel more confident to enter.

Yes. The community should have a voice in whose island is the best. Less power to the mods the better.

 

Since 52Phenomenon is hosting this event it will be her decision. If you complain about an unfair voting process or call the competition some kind of popularity contest this suggestion will be completely pointless. Regular players are much more likely to vote for someones island just because they like the owner or for other motives (trolling, getting paid, etc.). If you don't like past voting results you have to keep in mind that it's a subjective thing and even if players were allowed to vote you might disagree with their choices in the future. No one is being forced to participate.
