These 2 pictures really sum it up. Same game for ~20 min

Temps are much more consistent and CPU isn't acting all funky anymore.

But aren't the temps worse on the 2nd one?

Well. Technically yes, but its more consistent, and isn't heading up to 75C.

It 100% depends on what you are running, and how many applications you have open. Certain games require high amounts of resources, and the more a component is used, the hotter it gets. Eventually, if it is at almost 100% usage, it can easily get higher than 75 degrees. Its kinda weird

Run a stress simulator with a stock cooler and max heat settings off and you can push 100 Celcius easy.

Most laptops come with built-in stops which help prevent the computer from working too hard when it gets hot. Your laptop may have stops around 75 Celcius which help it never go over that

My gaming laptop stops at 102 degrees.

Never gone there and I'm glad. The only bad thing is my CPU kinda melted my fan a little.

Can't fail thermal paste if you never had any in the first place - lets be honest here, f*** laptops.

These are my idle temperatures; I was playing COD:MW before and thats the reason why it was hot

You can see the little jumps to 90+ degrees from the CPU while the GPU runs stable, partly because broken fan, partly because no paste, partly because laptops just suck in general
