I feel this - I used to grind Wingman with a friend of mine. I was Legendary Eagle in Wingman and after not playing Wingman for a month or so, the rank went poof and I played another with my mate just for the sake of playing. Got Gold Nova Master and I was laughing my a** off And this was the same with my Competitive shenanigans - I had 14 7day cooldowns in a row. 14. I deranked to S2 and played and won 60 games in a row - fragging 40kills each time and consistently getting called a smurf - before I got silver 3. From there it was smooth sailing and around 10 wins to each rankup, I ended up stopping at SEM.
For some reason, my wingman rank hasn't really been faulted much. I was placed in LEM in wingman, then stopped playing. Came back, won a game, and was back in LE. Stopped playing for 3-4 months, came back, tied one then won one, and got placed in LE again. Normal competitive, however, has been constantly brutal with my rank decay. Anytime I lose my rank, it's always 3-4 ranks lower when I come back
I should also mention that I rarely play CS:GO anymore and if I do its on brand new (non-prime) accounts, as my main was false VAC banned in September or October of 2018. (It was rebanned again for having a linked phone number to an account that was VAC banned - however this one wasn't false - as well). I was never above SEM on my main account. However, on an alt account that I had 450-some hours on because my main was just bad in terms of trust factor, elo and rank in general, I was MG1 and then let my friend use it as we wanted to compete in a small tournament that was set up... for silvers. At the time he was DMG on his main and didn't want to derank it so he deranked my alt all the way to Nova 1 :/ fun times. I miss them - I hate that my main was VAC'd
