The realistic way this needs to be done is manually by staff, which is very time intensive for them, obviously it would be ok if it was only a few requests a month or whatever. But the fact remains that the staff member would be taking the risk of deleting something required or wanted by that person. Then who is to blame, the staff only trying to help you and your selfish needs to have a 200x400 island?

What if it was your island because you took a month break? I know I wouldn’t want to come back. My rares alt has a starter island with a chest buried on it, you wouldn’t know the difference as I don’t always log in to that account every month.

Again a fair suggestion to have the players mark their island as “good to be deleted” but who is realistically going to mark their own island that?

I would like to see something like this implemented. I think it would be interesting to see the outcome. Perhaps even a "Vacant" forum topic to run alongside it where players can discuss giving up islands they do not require. The checkbox in conjunction with the forum then would serve as a safeguard against any malicious individuals offering up someone else's island.

Realistically, I know more than one person who made several attempts at setting up multiple alt islands together.

Maybe you can check if a island matches the exact blocks of a starter island with nothing or else it would get deleted. Also make sure the chest is empty or has starter contents.

But to be perfectly honest, the chunks of these peoples islands never load so it doesn't actually have an effect on gameplay unless someone decides to fly off into the horizon.

Or perhaps anyone with playing time less than 5 minutes (or somewhere around that) will have their islands deleted unless they are a confirmed alt. Unconfirmed alts are often involved in fishy business such as the whole easter basket farming thing.

Support. Of course, a program would have to be made to check for islands that haven't been modified or they would have to go through the islands by hand but I do think this would be a great way to free up resources (I assume that these islands take up some kind of server resource but I'm no programmer so I'm not sure)

    Wait, I have an idea.
Why not make it so instead of just permanently deleting the island, it gets saved, and the deleted?
For instance, say I decide to take a break for a month. After a week, my island would be saved as a file, and would be deleted. After the month is over, I log back in, do /is, it says that "Your island is being uploaded", takes a few extra seconds, then loads up, at a different coordinate?

From my knowledge, this wouldn't help solve the lag part of this suggestion- it could make it even worse.

From what I have seen, most of the vacant islands:
    • Have less than a day of time spent on them.
    • Have an island level of less than 10.
    • Have not been used for at least a year.
Islands that meet criteria like these are almost certainly never going to be used again, so they could probably be deleted. Or, as DingleBerry suggested, the island's chunks could be saved and stored, and then the island could be deleted. I don't think that uploading and placing the island would cause lag because it would be like making a new island, which doesn't cause any lag.
