The price recently went up because people have gone back to using it for island level, as it is once again the easiest material to farm that gives decent level.

After slime got nerfed, I placed at least 5DCs of gold blocks on my island, and still have a few more DCs I plan on placing. Many other players have been doing the same, stockpiling large sums of gold blocks to use for island level.

I purchased over 2DCs of those gold blocks from Haberson at 8:1, and a few other people bought him out, resulting in him switching his price from 8:1 to 6:1. This is also why my price switched from 12:1 to 8:1. I'm producing more gold than ever, but placing more gold than ever.

 

It gives the same amount of level as it has since they last nerfed it years ago. Everything else has just been nerfed enough now that gold is competitive again (at least until people find something better).

Definitely not great, but still something. I didn't keep too close of track, but I think I was getting somewhere around 80 levels per 12 stacks. I could run a more scientific test later, if someone hasn't already.

 

I found this wonderful mod that makes crafting a ton easier Burnt through all of it within 10 minutes thanks to this.
