I happened to find a chicken in my mob grinder, so I caught it and put it in a fenced in area (7x7). I logged back in today and the chicken is gone. Why did it despawn?

Certain mobs are set to despawn automatically from the server, unless a name tag was used on them as Monster_Sparklez said.

Animals from a spawner cage are set to disappear when the chunks (sections of in game area) unload (are no longer in active use because no player character is near by).

All hostile mobs will despawn when the chunks are unloaded. My guess is the chicken appeared that appeared in your mob grinder originally had a baby zombie riding it. I think the chicken counted as hostile in this situation.

If you ask nicely from a high donor who can use the /spawnmob command, the animals they make appear will not despawn. Tamed animals will also not despawn. And the animal babies that come from breeding should not despawn.

So, theoretically, if I get a baby chicken from an egg, it shouldn't despawn, as long as it's confined, right?

Baby chicken from a normal egg should stick around, yes. Giving it a home is a good idea so it doesn't wander off on you.

    Just for reference:

    - 10x Chicken I've had on my hopper since I started. Hatched from 8 eggs, then 1 more spawned on its own and I breeded them, then those stacked too. It's stuck between fenceposts on one side and a gate on the other. /visit me to see it next to my current spawn.

    - Sheep from spawner were despawning because my fence didn't completely surround them - fence won't connect to stone wall, allowing a 1-block space. After blocking this with more stone wall, they haven't despawned.

    Unrelated:
    - Squid are supposed to only spawn between y=64 and y=42, but somehow they're spawning in my spawner at about y=180.

I am just curious as to which version of minecraft you play on. Our /skyblock and /economy servers are really MC version 1.12.2. Fence and other texture issues occur when players join the server with a more recent version of minecraft.

I would like to visit you in game and check out the squid spawner you have. That makes me extra curious.

Feel free to stop by - the mob spawner is in the blue tower just below my spawn. 3 spawners in there - 2 pigzombie and 1 skeleton.

I'm on 1.12.2 - my issue was that fences don't connect to stone walls, at all, in any version of Minecraft.

Edit: About the squid - visited Harvey (cheeseboy9000) and saw squid in his sea at y200+. So maybe they spawn at any y= on this server?
