I recently found out one of my first friends on this server, who has never been given so much as a warning, just got perma-banned from forums. I'm wondering if anyone could help me figure out why.
He was a bad, bad boy...no denying that. Here's what he did:

    1) Posted a video or videos with swear words in them about 5 or so times in a row on his own profile page.

Would that offence fall under this rule...
    Spam
    Verbal warning - 1d mute - 3d mute - 1 day temp ban - 3 day temp ban - 1 week temp ban

Spam can include posting 3 or more replies in a row to a single thread, profile, etc. Spam can also include meaningless replies and ones that have no purpose. For instance, posting “jsiusussvyssyvsys” on a thread can be considered spam.

    ...or this rule?
    Profanity
    Verbal warning - 1 day mute - 3 day mute - 1 day tempban - 3 day tempban

Profanity is the posting of uncensored or censored forms of inappropriate language on the forums.

    2) He called the mods a word that sounds like 'maggots'.

So would that fall under this rule?:
    Disrespect
3 day mute - 1 day temp ban - 3 day temp ban - 1 week temp ban

Escalation can be dodged based on the severity of the disrespect.

Disrespect includes inflammatory, rude, and uncalled for comments towards another user on the forums.

    Or this one?
    Sexism/Racism
1 week temp ban - 1 month temp ban - Perm ban

Escalation can be dodged based on severity. Exception: "n****" or "nig" a reference commonly used between friends. Should the person being referred to feel offended they may report the post and moderators will decide if it is worthy of a punishment.

Sexism and racism includes comments that are meant to harm or offend a user of a certain race or sexuality.

Again, keep in mind that he had never done something like this before, so I'm wondering what the purpose of the rules are if the infraction escalation warnings/temp bans are skipped completely and any violations just end up in the perma-ban of first-time offenders. Should I be encouraging him to appeal or to report?

Mods just abuse their power and try to play hero. Get used to it.

When punishments exceed escalation there is usually a reason for it. The person needs to appeal and find out why they were banned so it can be handled rather that people jumping in, being defensive and making a mess of a generally simple process.

No way. He messed up and deserved to be punished, I'm not saying he didn't. Ban for a month, or two or three, even. Or idk, follow the infraction escalation guidelines for punishments that Cyp laid out? A perma-ban is excessive, imo.

Perm bans are not always permanent on these forums, remember that. As I said there are reasons to set them, it doesn't mean they cannot be appealed and the person wont be unbanned. The less complicated this is made, the better. The person appeals respectably and the outcome is generally very positive.

If punishments ever exceed escalation, aren't they breaking the rules that Cyp has laid out? He doesn't mention instances when that is allowed in his very detailed rules that both us players and you mods need to be following.

I've tried to get him to appeal, but he refuses. I'm going to keep trying, though, because it bothers me that people quit over this sort of thing, which is something we don't want happening around here, right? I'm not jumping in anywhere nor am I being defensive, that's your job. If there is a mess here, it is caused by whoever decided what he did warranted permanently denying him access to the forums.

His page is completely gone. But again, perma-banning for a first-time offence means someone didn't follow the outline Cyp has posted for infractions, and that's not right. Saying he can appeal doesn't make it ok that there's a mod out there breaking the rules just as blatantly as he did.

All punishments are at moderators discretion when multiple rules are broken. Sometimes higher infractions are used when there is no infraction in between which suits the punishment ie. We wish to ban for 2 weeks but no such infraction exists. Permbans are used as a sure fire way to get an appeal from someone because staff need to discuss something and cannot re ban if an infraction expires and the person still does the same crime.
It isn't always about following an escalation to the letter.
It is hard to explain in text and to people who don't have a good understanding of the staff team by being part of it.

Yea the best is when mods delegate appeals that they are directly involved in to other people who then botch the appeal process and the appeal is denied. (Happened to me but don't worry, I'll be back) :kissingheart:

Oh and it was a false ban they thought I was irl trading

Just a suggestion, but it should be about following an escalation to the letter, that is what the outlines are there for. He broke multiple rules in a first-time offence, perhaps combining the punishments would be a better idea (that would keep more players around) than automatically perma-banning?

How dare they mess with the Rocket!! (You better :brb:!)

As I said, there was a reason for this that can be resolved via appeal. I won't say much more as I'm repeating myself.

Repeat offenders are punished more harshly in order to ensure they don't continue to reoffend.

    You're still banned in-game?
Like I said, my friend had never been "offensive" before yet was perma-banned. I think his punishment was more extreme than what he did.

I'll go through your threads when I can to read up on it, but if you don't mind, I want to ask you a question and I want you to really think about it before you answer honestly. Why are you still here?
