a race is a group of people that have common physical characteristics such as skin color, hair color, etc.
Not all americans are white or black or have the same hair and etc.
america is a country
if you are american, thats your nationality.
thats like saying if you move from america to Canada, your race will change from american to canadian lol

 

i'm not saying you can call it a race, i'm just saying some people do it because there are races like african american/white american but they just cut out the description so it turns to american.
