posting this here, oops if someone already beat me too it.

since i don't want to copy what the author of the original said, i'm gonna post the link below, and if you haven't read it yet, you should.

why people shouldn't joke about triggers | Mineverse Forums

please read it, and i know it's the internet and nothing is gonna be perfect, but it's really disrespectful when people joke about being 'triggered' or someone getting 'triggered'.

savolyn aka carolyn from mv does a good job of explaining why you shouldn't joke around about triggers, triggering someone, or use the word as a joke.

I have severe ptsd from abuse and I use the term in a joking manner myself. You're overreacting a bit. If someones upset they'll let you know.

I'm actually not overreacting. It's the same with the word 'cancer'. Someone could say it in a joke way. Then someone could laugh, but then there might be someone with a family member who's either a survivor or is fighting it now. It's just not needed. Sorry about what you're dealing with.
    Not really funny but ok.
    That's not funny.

Anytime anyone's uses a slightly controversial word as a joke, people who shouldn't have a problem with it end up having a problem with it.

A lot of gay people are okay with jokingly being called "faggots." A lot of black people are okay with jokingly being called "n*****s." A lot of people who suffer from various triggers are fine with using the word "trigger."

The words, jokes, etc. aren't the problem, and not saying or joking about something won't solve problems.

I never really saw people make fun of people with PTSD but I see your point of certain words being used in the wrong context but like I said the internet has some weird places.

I don't think most people who use the word actually mean to offend people with these disorders deliberately.

They don't purposely make fun of people with triggers. That's what I was getting at; people with triggers don't have a problem with the word trigger when it's used in a joking manner.

And if someone really has an issue with it, they could say "hey I have *this mental illness* and I'd appreciate if you didn't make fun of it."

But no one has said that, and it's harmless.

Cause (an event or situation) to happen or exist.
In it's basic form Trigger relates neither to ones mental illness or the meme. No one owns the word trigger and it is not exclusive to any context.

Now the word and using it as a joke is another way of saying that someone has been made to respond in a negative way: usually an outburst of rage, jealousy, hate or similar.

It does not relate to the triggers of those with a mental illness.

While I will say using the word triggered to describe every time someone shows a reaction to something is really stupid I don't feel like people should be too offended or upset when people use it as a joke.
I understand personally what it is like to be triggered by events that have lead to problems for me. When I first saw people using the term I was like "I don't think it is right to make fun of triggers". But eventually I realized the context the joke is used is not to do with a mental illness; at least thats not how people use it.

Its one of those things. I feel like people should be mindful of what they say, and if the term is making someone uncomfortable, reconsider it. If you do joke about someones mental illness then that is just twisted and unacceptable. If you do use the triggered joke just be aware of context.
