I think mail would be really convenient, especially for coops and such.

Basically I think there should be a command, /mail, which they have on a lot of servers where you can pm somebody while they are not online and when they do login they get a notification if they got any mail.

Okay, I'm editing this and maybe there could be a trust list kind of but not where you can only leave mail for people trusted on your island, but maybe just a list of people you talk to a lot.
(To prevent spam for .net)
Also, if you don't read or reply to your mail for a certain amount of time, maybe it could be cleared every so often. (To prevent spam and lag)

 

I've seen and used /mail send [Name] [Text] on other servers before and it was very useful. Especially when you're in a different timezone as another player. This may prevent griefing. You do not have to /trust the player so they can put a note (sign) on your island. Once someone asked me to /trust them so they could communicate with me through sign. The next day when I logged on, my island was completely destroyed.
