Okay, I planned on making a small area with a few chickens where every time an egg dropped, it would immediately go into a hopper and then into a chest where I would collect them. Problem is, when I test it (by dropping an egg in) the hopper doesn't pick up the egg, and when I put the egg in the hopper manually it doesn't go into the chest. Am I just not doing this right or has something been disabled to discourage people overdoing it on the chickens and causing lag?

Thanks, that's what I thought had happened, I just couldn't be sure...I'll just have to pick them up by hand then!

They're disabled.

 

They are disabled because of looting and when hoppers were out, players could easily loot chests which are locked using hoppers. They are disabled only for the benefit of the server and I think Cyp is working on fixing it.

 

Before there was island protect, people could place anything anywhere, we could just go to a locked chest and place a hopper under the chest which would cause looting
