5. Hamilton or Jefferson? Support your answer. This is PERFECT timing. I had to write a 5 paragraph essay in 45 minutes about who should be president in 1800 last week in school. I chose Jefferson. Here is my essay which I got a B on. (a B is decent) I would NOT recommend reading the whole thing as it is a waste of your time.

Election of 1800 Essay

In the upcoming 1800 presidential election, Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic Republican is running against John Adams, a federalist. In years before the election, the national bank was created, which Adams supported and Jefferson opposed, the Whiskey Rebellion occurred and Washington sent troops to stop it which Adams supported and Jefferson opposed, and the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed, which Adams supported and Jefferson opposed. Thomas Jefferson of the Democratic-Republican party is the best candidate for president in the election of 1800 because he believes in not giving the national government too much power, listening to the people, and protecting individuals’ rights.

Thomas Jefferson thinks the national government should be limited. Previously, the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans were debating over whether they should have a national bank or not. Washington chose to have a national bank. John Adams thought there should be a national bank because it is necessary and proper. Thomas Jefferson opposed the idea of a national bank because believed it gave the government too much power, and it only benefited the rich. He thought it was unconstitutional because the constitution did not say there could be a national bank, and it was just convenient, not necessary and proper. I agree with Thomas Jefferson. Creating a national bank sets a bad precedent. If the federal government does one thing that isn’t allowed in the Constitution, they could do other things, and have too much power. A national bank also takes power from the states. According to Thomas Jefferson, “to take a single step beyond the boundaries drawn around the powers of Congress is to take possession of a boundless field of power.” That means that if they let the federal government take more power, the federal government could have unlimited power. Thomas Jefferson also said that “it would swallow up all the delegated powers [of the states],” which means letting the national government expand power takes away the states’ power. Alexander Hamilton, a Federalist said that “The powers contained in the constitution ought to be construed liberally in advancement of the public good.” So if the policy advances the public good, “necessary” can be interpreted broadly. This argument is incorrect because the “public good,” is an opinion, not objective, so people can argue it is for the public good, or isn’t. Also, “necessary” is a narrow definition. If the framers of the Constitution meant useful, they would say useful instead of necessary.

Thomas Jefferson believes in listening to the people. The government passed a tax on whiskey. People rebelled (known as the Whiskey Rebellion,) and Washington sent troops to stop them. Thomas Jefferson wanted to listen to the people more than stop them, so he wanted to repeal the tax. John Adams wanted to keep the tax, and send troops against the rebels. I agree with Thomas Jefferson. Rebellion can be good, because the government listens to the people. If the law stays, the country could split. Thomas Jefferson said “separation, which perhaps was a very distant and problematic event, is now near and certain.” Because of the excise tax, the country could split into people who like the Whiskey tax, and don’t. In addition, Jefferson said “a little rebellion now and then is a good thing,” which means that rebellion can be good, because it gets the government to listen to the people. Hamilton said “Shall the majority govern or be governed?” He wanted the majority to be governed by a small
group of people. His argument is incorrect because if a small group of people governs the country, than the federal government will have too much power. Also, the common man is capable of making smart decisions, not just a few people. The government is created for the people, so it should listen to the people.

Jefferson believes in protecting rights. Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. The Alien Acts increased the time it came to be a citizen and allowed aliens to be jailed or deported, and the Sedition act allowed people who said bad things about the government to be arrested. Thomas Jefferson opposed these acts, because he believed they were unconstitutional, and they peoples’ rights to freedom of speech. Adams thought it was constitutional, and the freedom of speech was limited, not violated. I agree with Thomas Jefferson. The Constitution gives the government no right to an Alien law, and it forbids the Sedition Act. Most aliens are not a threat. According to James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, “the first [alien act] exercises a power nowhere delegated to the federal government,” which means the Constitution does not give the right to pass Alien Acts. They also said “the other act [the Sedition Act] exercises in like manner, a power not delegated to the Constitution, but on the contrary, expresses and positively forbidden by one of the amendments. Timothy Pickering says the act is “only for those pests of society...”who write, print, utter, or publish any false or malicious writings against the government.” This argument is invalid because it still violates the freedom of speech, and it limits what news editors can publish.

Therefore, Thomas Jefferson should be elected for president because he believes in limited national government, listening to the people, and protecting individuals’ rights. He believed that if the federal government created a national bank (which wasn’t in the Constitution,) they could do other things not in the Constitution and have unlimited power. Rebellion can be good sometimes, because it gets the government to listen to the people. When the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed, he opposed them because he wanted to protect people’s rights. Thomas Jefferson is the best candidate for president.
