Color Codes are for donor 25+ and allow you to type color in chat. However, if you are a non-donor, color codes can be used in private messages to people using the command "/msg (Insert Username Here)". I always just use the guide from the actual Essentials plugin. MC Colour Guide I think it should be said that all colors look darker when signs are facing North/South but look perfectly fine when facing East/West. Here's an example:
