So let me start off by saying "hello, I am Sam, Sam I am", nice to meet you all. Normally I'd be under my own name, Geonecis, but alas I let my GF use the account so she could play and didn't plan on joining this server as well. When I joined I did so by borrowing the account of a long time friend, so although my name hints that I may be a female I am not. haha Yes I'm aware that this is not the introduction forums, but the point of this thread is NOT to introduce myself.

Let me get to the point, a few days ago (don't know the exact date) I was selling bone meal and to do this you don't need to pay attention to the game so I was looking away. When I looked again to see that I had run out of bone meal (you do not have 18x bone meal, spammed in my chat, w/e) I had also noticed that I had dirt, sand, lava bucket in my inventory that did not belong to me...so someone dropped this stuff on me. I didn't appreciate it knowing it is illegal to trade said items. :/ I reacted in chat and a player said it was theirs and that if I didn't want it to give it back....or something like that, but by that time I had already thrown it all in the lava at spawn and the player didn't say anything more about it.

Then yesterday, I think it was yesterday (I have a really bad sense of time) someone who was 'quitting' asked for the attention of a greenie and I replied. He dropped everything he owned, including two lava buckets, 1 water bucket, a stack of dirt, and some sand that I remember of. now again when I noticed these illegal items I panicked, AGAIN, and went to spawn and dropped them all in lava.

It's a lot to read I know, but it brings me to the questions, what do you do in that situation? Am I safe from being in trouble? and overall how would you feel if these things had happened to you?

 

The thing is, for the first one, you shouldn't have given the player back their items unless you SAW them die. For all we know, they could have just lied in order to get items. If you saw them die and they asked for their items back, that's perfectly fine. But unless you SAW the player die and gave them their items back, I and many others would consider it illegally trading. I see why you would do it, but yeah. Since I'm not a moderator, I'll tag an org mod to deal with this.

Keep these items in a separate chest for now. (If you have any of them left.)
Also, do you recall their usernames?

If that does happen, keep it in another chest separate to the ones where you store all your other items. If you think something may happen such as a greenie saying he is 'quitting' or leaving the server, screenshot the chat, just in case.
For this, I'm pretty sure you'd be safe, as you didn't trade it/give it back.

 

Yes, I agree with Talia. If this ever happens again, and you don't have proof of the player handing the items to you, you can just give them to a moderator for them to discard (or if theres none around, discard them yourself). The only way something like this would turn illegal is if you kept the items and used them to your benefit by either using them or keeping them for personal use. If at all possible, in future situations like this, try to get screenshots of the player dropping illegals to you so that they can be punished thusly. And if you cant get screenshots, then that's perfectly fine. You can still inform a moderator about what happened and who did it and we can do our best to try and figure it out from there

 

I didn't give them back to this user, I threw them in lava for two reasons. I couldn't prove it was them that gave them to me, and I didn't want them to do it to someone else if it was them.

I don't remember their names at all sadly.

Sometimes people throw random illegal items to me when I am AFK, or I'm there but I just don't notice straight away. I also occasionally find illegal items lying around on my island where someone's dumped it from their inventory or died there. If I see someone throw an illegal item to me, I explain to them that it's illegal (and why). If they really didn't know and are apologetic, I usually return it to them, however if they say "who cares" etc. I keep the item and report them.

I keep these items separate from my own things. I don't throw them in the void in case someone accuses me later that I obtained illegal items and kept them for myself. I prefer to give the illegal items to a moderator when I see them so if I am later accused of receiving illegal items, I can say "I gave the illegal items to [insertmoderatornamehere]" and then they can back me up, and that way I know I'll never be in trouble over it.

Also, it's worth noting that moderators sometimes refund lost items to new people who glitch out and die, but they don't get a special supply of items to do this with. By giving the illegal items to a mod, I like to think I'm helping them out with their refund items supply. x
