I build a very dark place way up high with canals that should push the mobs out and cause them to fall to their deaths, but absolutely no mobs have spawned. What gives?

 

Well i think the only way to do this is to get spawners..

 

Mobs do not spawn naturally. You need spawners.

 

And even with spawners your still required to stand nearby. ._.
