I'm not great with redstone but I can easily build you a affordable melon farm

 

Take a look at this video, exactly how i have my melon, pumpkin farm set up.

 

I actually tried this in the beginning, but everytime the entities were deleted the boat was also deleted

 

that one is cool, but if you want a complicated ,expensive and not that much better one, you can use timed pistons to push up the dirt block where the melon has grown, then you link a timed water flow to it to harvest the melons and send them to where you afk .

note pretty complicated... im sure there is a tutorial for it somewhere..

This one isn't so efficient but it works, it has 1 melon seed planted, and if you're wondering, there's a redstone wire in the little hole.
