Funnily enough, my doesn't crash when its running at 98 degrees celcius, as shown in the photo below:

anyways, suggest things. I think it may be a memory issue as I only have 8 GB atm, and am looking at upgrading that.

However, when I boot into Linux I have no problems whatsoever when it comes to my computer freezing and whatnot. I don't have any idea what could be causing it; maybe just that Windows is a bad OS

Maybe its to do with the cpu? windows probably detects the high temp and shuts off

I think you get a blue screen of death when it's too hot?

I’d assume so except that it literally only crashes when it’s under 60°C - I know a lot of you think that that’s frying hot but believe me.

    It’s an acer laptop.

No. Your computer, if it’s a generic office laptop, hibernates itself and refuses to turn back on until it reaches an “acceptable operating temperature”. A gaming laptop/desktop will “throttle” (intentionally slow down the CPU/GPU) itself to cool down.

The only problem with this is that I set the critical throttle temperature (throttles to <10% of your CPU power) to 103°C so it shouldn’t be a problem...

The BIOS of a computer has 2 options for throttling thingamabobs. Warning level and critical level. By default, my warning was set to 73°C and critical to 95°C.

In other words the CPU *shouldn’t* be the problem unless for some reason when the CPU idles it kills itself

Oh yeah and clarification of what I mean by crash - I mean like the screen freezes and the previous 2ms of sound you listened to will loop.

I also forgot to mention that i had this problem a lot with a very old Acer Gaming laptop of mine (Acer Aspire 1st or 2nd gen - had an Intel Celeron Z3750 or something and a GeForce G 105M. First series stuff). The only difference is that this crashed when it had been running extremely high-intensity for 1-2 hours, probably reaching its critical throttle limit a lot more frequently than my current laptop. Eg. playing Portal 2 for 1 and a half hours straight, it would often crash/freeze. At the end of this period though the computer would be so hot that my thighs would be red and stay red for maybe an hour.

Sorry if this sounds like a heavy flaming; that was not my intention.

Maybe its a trait with Acer gaming laptops?

Could you give some insight into the kinds of things you're doing while it crashes?

My initial suspect would be RAM. Windows really doesn't care about RAM usage, and just throws tons of things at you all the time. It may just be the way I use my computer, but I'm almost constantly at 8-10GB of RAM usage on Windows. All I have open is IntelliJ, a few Chrome tabs, and Discord, and those three + all of my Windows services totals 10GB of RAM usage, with those first three I mentioned only taking up a total of 3GB.

Linux is a lot more light generally, and doesn't spam you with all these unnecessary services and such.

There's also a chance that you could be using your computer around max RAM usage, then the automated Windows Defender scan kicks on in the background, hogging the rest of your RAM while trying to push the CPU, causing the computer to stop.

Next time it crashes, also check Event Log to see if anything stuck in there that seems suspicious.

im thinking that since windows runs many upon many background apps while windows is on, you should upgrade your memory to ddr4 16gb (if ddr4 is supported). 16gb is the perfect amount of ram for any amount of gaming whatsoever.

As I said I am working on it - I don’t have a job and it’s been proven impossible in these times with a pandemic gone round

Yeah as I’ve said a few times now I need to upgrade my RAM.

And I didn’t think of that but now that you state it is incredibly obvious. Event Logs actually do catch exceptions sometimes lmao

What I do when it crashes - idle essentially. I’d be doing work on an assessment, playing a browser game or whatever, be in a call on Discord (and not at the same time) and my computer will cease to respond. It’s only started happening the past 2 days. Kinda worried I fried something and thats the reason it’s happening

Ram isn't the issue. Ram can't cause your computer to freeze. Usually this problem happens when there isn't sufficient voltage for an overclock or when the cpu runs too hot. in your case, id either lower your OC or increase the voltage (i recommend lowering the oc to get better temps)
and the reason you havent had this before is because high temps combined with high-ish voltages put unnecessary strain on your CPU and wear it out, causing once-stable OCs to become unstable.

3 conflicts go with your statements.

    a) its a laptop. You can’t overclock laptop CPUs.
    b) RAM can cause the computer to freeze if its all being used, say by a high-performance game or 50 tabs of chrome or something
    c) these crashes occur when my cpu is idle, or less than 5% util, <60°C temps.
