    Introduction:
Item filters are an essential in many builds, such as casinos, farms that have unwanted drops or just as a general storage system.

    The issue:
Traditional item filters (the simple one that's all over YouTube) are fine on a normal world, but on Skyblock hoppers are limited and they work in multiples of 16.

I sought to reduce the hopper cost with my previous design; the cost was its speed (only filtering 1 item in the time it takes to transfer 16 [very slow]). So in the past few days I have spent some time looking over and reworking the item filter I designed to try to make it faster.

    The solution!
I created a new version of the same filter that is 16 times faster!! (as the title suggests)
This new version is the same speed as traditional item filters, but is even more useful!

Also, this filter will also work outside of Skyblock, with a very minor modification (which I will display).

The item filter has 3 different parts:

    • The input
      • This can be connected to any source, a farm, a chest or just out in the open for players to throw items into.
    • Chest Module 1*
    • Chest Module 2*
Note: There have to be 2 different alternating modules otherwise it breaks due to interactions between modules. (the difference isn't that big)

    The tutorial:

    • Step 1: The Input
      • Required materials:
        • 1 Hopper
        • 2 Comparators
        • 1 Sticky piston
        • 3 Redstone dust (1 for normal world)
        • 1 Observer (2 for normal world)
        • 1 Trapdoor [any type] (not needed for normal world)
        • 5 Normal blocks [eg. stone] (4 for normal world)
        • 1 Dropper
        • (optional) Input chest
      • How to build:

    • Step 2: The Main Module Design
      • Required materials:
        • 2 Powered rails
        • 3 Droppers
        • 1 Hopper
        • 1 Comparator
        • 4 Observers
        • 2 Sticky pistons
        • 2 Redstone dust
        • 2 Chests (can be trapped if desired)
        • 7 Normal blocks [eg. stone]
      • How to build:
    upload_2020-1-21_23-58-43.png
    • Step 3: The Different Modules

    ^ Module 1 ^
    upload_2020-1-22_0-5-26.png
    ^ Module 2 ^

When combined, they should look something like this:
    upload_2020-1-22_0-9-50.png

A few more things, this system can filter up to 54 different items per chest as long as there is one of that item in a slot. If a slot is empty it will be automatically filled.

^ In this example the chest would only accept those 6 items ^

    Enjoy the filter guys :D

That's cool! Maybe I'll use this design once I get back in game. Anyways thanks for making and sharing the design with us :)

Amazing - the 16 items thing is annoying for sorters great to see someone made one! As far as I know zim1970 | Skyblock Forums made a really simple one, but...... this one is cool!

Drogo wonders if these systems will cause more lag than regular hopper sorter systems and if so will developers revert to normal hopper functionality only to find people continue to use this system as it is faster and cheaper and doesn’t use expensive hoppers leaving the developers thinking maybe they just should have left hoppers as they were in the first place.
Drogo also wonders if you read that in one breath due to the lack of fullstops.

Interestingly, this does not cause that much lag. This system uses fairly simple redstone components, which are optimized by default through Spigot/Paper. Hoppers cause mass amounts of lag due to how much they have going on within a single block. Hoppers must check whether or not something is above them, check if there is something above them and if they have space to pull it in, if they do then pull it in and update their inventory, check if they're connected to something, choose whether or not they're able to transfer to it, all the while updating their inventory status to reflect the items currently stored within them. Overall, hoppers, especially with stock settings, can be quite destructive to server performance, especially on mass scale when there's potentially hundreds to thousands of hoppers being ticked at one time.
I did indeed read this in one breath, and was mentally out of breath after.

This works amazingly but I’m still confused on what order do the modules go in I see the first 4 but what after?

They can just keep repeating :)
It just keeps alternating, I just built 4 modules to demonstrate how they link together, but it can keep going.

Side note: currently working on a much more compact design :)
