    TLDR at bottom

    Hello all,

I've spoken to many players about this in-game, but I thought I'd make a forums post to make it official.

Since my return, I've been working on a charity island for Skyblock's newer players. I dearly loved playing on this server when I was younger, and a large part of that was due to Skyblock's vibrant community. However, I sometimes see old players coming on for a few minutes, and many of them echo the same sentiment: "Skyblock is dying".

While I do not share this unnecessarily pessimistic opinion, I do believe that it's best to take immediate action to help boost Skyblock's player retention rate. Too many times, I see new players hop on for a few minutes, become frustrated with the complexity and difficulty of getting anything worthwhile(mostly grass, tools, and building materials), and abandon ship.

The efforts of a few rich players in hosting drop parties when quitting or during holidays, while kind-spirited, don't actually do much to help. In my opinion, this is because most new players have no sense of how the economy works and are either swindled out of their lucky drop-party windfalls by unscrupulous donors, or blow all their newfound wealth on useless crap for high prices. This phenomenon makes itself known not just at player drop parties, but at every single holiday event without fail.

To solve this issue, I've decided to go ahead and make a charity island where new players can both buy useful starter's items at or below market rate, and sell items to me at or above market rate. I seek to eliminate the well-intentioned yet ineffective giving of grass to new players, and instead provide them directly with useful items to not only build themselves a solid island foundation, but establish a reliable source of income as well.

The selling part of the island will, in theory, provide these new players with a small income to supplement their daily voting allowances. These small increments of grass will be infinitely more beneficial to them than just simply handing them a few stacks, as trading and earning grass in small amounts will allow them to learn how the economy works. In the end, I hope to help educate new players to make informed trades and avoid getting scammed and ragequitting. The reason for me buying their goods at above market price is, again, to stop them from getting frustrated with the perceived worthlessness of their items. It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, for a newbie using a traditional treefarm or cobble generator, to compete with the massive thousand-block-per-hour farms that established players love to use.

Of course, the success of this project leans heavily on the community as a whole. After all, it takes a village to raise a child(disclaimer: this is an African proverb, not my own quote).

I'd much appreciate any insight or suggestions you could offer me in improving this project. I'm well aware that it is extremely ambitious, and that it can be taken advantage of easily by wealthier players.

    Thanks,

    GAMER

    TLDR:
Am make charity to help new player(s) learn to play . If u not want donate, please not steal or cheat system. Thx

Trusting players to not abuse the system is a big risk, especially when it is something you are not online 24/7 to monitor. This is basically a really really cheap shop. Besides, with every new player coming on going to your island and selling items for higher then market value, their knowledge of item prices will not be on par with the other established players.

I tried to do similar. Unfortunately the amount of people in need getting the benefits was smaller than established players. For basic items I’m sure the risk is lower somewhat.

Thanks for replying. I've already taken that into consideration, and the best idea I've come up with is just to ask for stagg cooperation in finding everyone's alts and guest banning them, or locking and whitelisting new players for a few weeks.

Regarding the price knowledge, I've begun setting up signs that list actual prices already, as well as chest shop tutorials and redstone cobble gem tutorials. I also won't be buying the super easy to farm items, and will instead buy items that require a bit of work, such as certain crops, quartz, wood, and any other items I can get from people's suggestions.

Whilst I admire the effort and thought into this, I do believe the reason the majority of new players leave is often due to the fact they are not willing to actually put the time or effort into doing things for themselves, not willing to grind for the grass, or wood or cobble etc, they come on, beg for stuff then leave when they don't get it.

It is a generalized statement, which does not apply to a small minority of people who stay, but it is the cause of the retention issue. Laziness, for which there is no cure.

I really do hope your idea works, and I will also be willing to donate things to do so, much like Kai's shop I believe which gives out free wood and cobble available to new players (perhaps not as well advertised but still, its there).

As nearly everyone here said there will be abuse of skyblocker alts that are an alt of an established player but the alt they have has just joined and it's name does no tsound anything like the main.

I know a couple of alts.

That sounds like a half-decent way to combat it. I bid you good luck with the island.

I love that you are thoughtful, only downside is people and they will go through many measures just to ruin it no matter how enforced it is people can be bad, i know you said you have taken it into consideration but there are some people out there who just think for themselves only. Anyway this would be a project i am willing to donate to when i am on next...

If the new players can labour through the first few weeks then things get a bit easier. Perhaps there is a way for the developers to award new players extra grass and keys per vote for the first 3 weeks after joining.
This should help them to get established.
Drogo knows the challenge is to start with nothing and build yourself up, but how many potential long term players quit because they just can’t be bothered.
This struggling stage accounts for such a small percentage of time should the players become long term skyblockers so just do away with it and perhaps we will see more people stay.

The near only way to combat it is to get a alt that is on as much as possible with a script/mod running to check chat (the chestshop is in the alt's name) and if a player buys the shop, say 5 times in 2 hours it would check when it's next(the player) in /near (the alt at the island spawn) and /kick it.

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna lock the island and add people by hand once I explain how the game works to them. Thanks though!

Hey Azraelistics, I've seen you online quite a bit these past few days! It's always good to see old players returning; I feel like having a resource like this to draw on could've definitely smoothed your transition back into the game :D

Ive got my fair share of doubts but i think my investment will go to good. Our activity combined in watching the island should be helpful
