I suggest to drastically reduce the number of shops any one person can have.
So many new players are wanting to set up shops to sell items because let’s face it, that’s how you progress in the game. Sell things to gain grass to then buy the things you want to be able to build up your island. With a number of huge shops selling almost every thing available at prices that greenies can’t compete with they are never going to get ahead and they will quit.
Reducing the number of shops one has will mean everyone will be able to sell something and get a head. This may require additional gameplay functionality that allows people to easily search who sells what or else chat will be flooded with ads.
I know everyone likes the idea of a one stop shop but this means that all the grass goes into one pocket.

Even if you reduce the number of shops people can have it still won’t stop more established players from getting more business.

If they are restricted then they will have to choose items to no longer sell. New players will then be able to sell these items. Yes established players will still do better as they will choose what they sell but it gives new players a foot in the door.
The way the server is now, you have to be a donor to get ahead.

No support; I've seen some greybean islands with larger and cheaper shops than even large-scale suppliers like Haberson or LadyAnkie. I agree, those are the main places people go to buy things, but it doesn't mean they don't have other options.

And no way is donor, as you said, "a need to get ahead", maybe except for the kits. Other than kits, Donor is mostly cosmetic perks, with no benefits. You probably know Monster_Sparklez, who in 2015 or 2016 was one of the richest players on the server - a greenie. The main thing is that not a lot has changed from the old server except island variation, nether, economies and island decoration/features, like the motd or welcome message.

Almost nothing has changed in terms of ranks; it's 100% possible to be a big name as a greenie. Not very easy for people starting out, surely, but every player has to grind for their grass, including donors.

A lot of players (including me) haven't spent a cent on the server, and received ranks out of acts of Kindness (like an xmas gift) or by buying through rares/grass.

Remember: Anybody can advertise their shop in chat, having donor just makes it looks nicer. It's not a big difference, but cosmetic.

If one established player doesn’t sell, then another established player would. Restricting a shop doesn’t mean necessarily non donors will be the only ones selling a certain thing. The way the game works, non donors will need to work harder

Nah this would cut eco income for players who take the time to set up shops and then also fill them so it's always a big chain think of it as saying let's cut the number of mcdonalds in half because they are taking too much away from new resteraunt owners

Placing shop limits will just lower all economic activity, just like if this were a thing in the real world.

W4ste_Gam3r is right, players with multiple alts can easily bypass this restriction. And considering the more well-off players generally have more alts, this will completely backfire on making non-ranked players' shops more competitive.

I also disagree with this. Non-ranked players can compete with ranked players' shops as long as the focus on a limited inventory and put in the effort - e.g. the recent surge in quartz and skulker farming mostly driven by non-ranked players.

This is coming from a person who started their shop as a greybean.
