So I tend to browse through moderator applications and I have noticed a concerning pattern. Applicants are often given no supports or neutrals because they "cannot see the person helping out a lot". As a moderator I would be dealing with issues in private consistently. Things players cannot see. I would donate items to others without people knowing. So whenever I see someone say that they cannot see someone helping out it makes me want to go and rant about how do you see a person helping when they are not publicly helping. Which is what this thread basically is. A mini rant to say what is on the minds of every applicant so far who has been told they need to help more" and "are not seen helping". People can help others in more ways than just being the first one to string together an answer questions and constantly ask people in chat if they need things. There are players who help in private rather than publicly do so. Other players may show kindness by giving away items to those who need it. Others brings a cheerful personality to the server and are welcoming to new comers. All this helps the server which is what mods try to do. Most people focus so much on helpfulness that other traits and good qualities slip by. When giving feedback avoid talking about helpfulness unless the person who is applying perhaps wasn't helpful to you when you asked or was rude when providing help. Please judge applicants fairly.
I completely understand. I've answered people in chat and they just don't seem to see. Messages make a little noise now and people can see them a little better. It is just more productive that way.
Completely true. It also makes applicants feel the need to publicly help, which ends up more of just a contest in trying to quickly beat everyone to answering a question and making leaps to just try and prove they’re helpful. Yeah, helping out in chat is a good thing to see, but when it’s an annoying stretch trying to beat-the-mods-to-it type of thing, ugh.
As people should be aware applying for staff is not a contest. There should be no rush to answer questions to get validation. Help should be genuine and not just because you have an application. The more people expect applicants to show off their help, the less it becomes about what is important. Being a caring and dedicated staff member is better than one who only cares about being promoted.

Well as I like to say... if the shoe fits. I didn't have anyone in mind when I wrote it but if it describes you well then... don't be that person.
Similar to how some people donate to the homeless or charities without recognition and some make YouTube videos about it.
All help should be genuine. Some people just answer questions with “I think” or give false answers just for recognition. If you don’t know the answer, don’t answer the question.
I actually prefer private messaging to help others because it’s less spammy, and supports/no supports mean absolutely nothing. Instead, the responders should give feedback
No supports and supports do mean something small. It’s a good quick way to see what the community thinks of the player. But that is not as useful as giving actual useful feedback. Unless there really is nothing you need to say as feedback
yeaahah, as a mod back in the days I usually just private msged and randomly tped to ppl to give em items. uhuh today on the news: players are NOT supporting applicants for NOT spamming in public chat in return for recognition
Like when you help in public chat alot like crazy and then someone says u need to help more makes me frustrated as I always help in public chat and sometimes in private messages.I
Agreed. I'm sure if an applicant went in chat and said "giving items away because I'm being helpful" that they would get slammed on their app but still would be asked to be more helpful. Its almost like you cannot win.
I will say that this Skyblock community is extremely harsh to moderator applicants. (hence why I’ve never applied) Many negatively rate applications because of trivial things such as: —no colour/too much colour —minor typos (even if the applicant stated that English is not their first language) —the spacing/font/length of their application Etc. There are tons of great players that care about the community that just aren’t skilled at expressing themselves in written form. But the one thing that really bothers me is when someone rates an application negatively just because they don’t know the person. I see lots of “No Support” because they aren’t part of a particular social circle. And sometimes because the viewer has never had any personal interaction with the applicant. Sometimes “No Support” is simply given because the viewer sees that everyone else rated it that way, or that their friends voted in that direction. All of the comments on the application begin to look the same because it’s a wave of either approval or disapproval. Sometimes “No Support” is added because the viewer has an application of their own and want to increase their chances of success. Sometimes “No Support” is written without a reason. Tearing others down does not lift anyone up. Moderator applications here are basically like roasting someone, but without the jokes. It is extreme criticism. Players sometimes get hostile, snarky, accusatory and often nitpick each other. Negativity only breeds more negativity. Here is a way to improve Moderator Applications (that will never be implemented): Make all of the comments and ratings invisible to the viewer (except staff). There will be less bias. The viewer will simply read the application without seeing what others have said. Without seeing how many support/no support votes they received. They can still add a message, but it would only be visible to staff. Much love to all of the applicants.
I agree mostly with this since I have been applying for about 3 years and still Ive came across to many players who either are negative or hates me but hey there are still good players. Its just sometimes annoying when people give their own opinion on the color, typos, fonts, sizes and etc. For example player 1: Please use other colors and space out. Then another player comes and say to keep it that way. And its very confusing and somehow annoying that you try to please both players. I am one of the players who isnt good at expressing themselves and english isnt their first language therefore I make a lot of typoes but thanks for Lycel for helping me and telling me about grammarly which helped me a lot. In every applicant there is a person who hates on him/her and give the applicant a no support cause of their bad history together in the past. People should give their feed back based whether if the applicant suits that position or not and if they are qualified or not. But sadly some people are like that. Lastly, I agree with your suggestion about only letting staff view the application as it prevents the negative posts that can happen as some other servers' forums have. I strongly agree with all of these points and if you were active and applying for mod you would be a great moderator in my opinion.
Honestly this mod application tradition here is a joke. When I want to apply for a job I send my application to the boss, I don't pin it at the entrance and ask the customers for review or if they want me to work here. It's not an election, it's more of a mascarade, as proven by the feedbacks that are given sometimes, which are plain ridiculous. Vikki has given some good examples. Mod apps should be in a sub-forum like the ban appeals, where they can be viewed and replied to only by staff. Make them visible once they are accepted / denied if you want to, though this isn't really necessary.

But when you apply for a job you list referees. People that can vouch for you from previous experience. So having completely private applications that only staff can see doesn’t allow for players to have anyone vouch for them. A staff member may have a bad opinion but the player may not be. If it’s all private no one can tell the staff and that person may be turned down and discouraged. That is not fair. Staff have their bias and it’s not a dig... everyone is biased. I prefer the community to have a say in who represents the community because we have more insight into how they behave than staff who are more focused on their own role. Of course this means people are going to pop up and be weird but it can be disputed. Apologies for my 2am rambles but I disagree with private applications because staff cannot spend that much time analysing players which creates unfairness, Timezone bias and more competition to be liked by staff rather than by the community.
